Tripod question?

I tried searching but the filter kept removing the 526 from the search so it made it difficult to narrow down results.

I am looking at the Bogen 526 head along with the 3193 legs and was wondering if this was a good combo for the HVX?

How does this compare to the popular combo of the Cartoni F100 and Miller Solo sticks?

Also, what would be a typical price range of a 526 and 3193 legs?

Doesn't that seem like a little over kill? that tripod is for a twenty pound to thirty pound camera. I think you're spending way more than what is necessary for your camera. I use the 501 head and the 525 (mvb) pkit. for a 13 pound camera, it runs around $700.
Very nice and rock solid. Just seems like a lot of cash to drop on sticks that are for a camera 5 times the weight of the HVX.

Well... it depends if you have plans for upgrading your equipment in the future.
I can speack for myself... We do have plans to use a cinema style package with the RedRock M2 35mmm Lens adapter with a my 80-200mm Nikon AIS lens, along with a Chrozsiel Mattebox and FolllowFocus on Zacuto Plate & Rails which I already own, plus a 7" Marshall HD Monitor and IDX batteries, all of them with a total weight of at least 20lbs...

My tripod is also the Heavy Duty one, since we currently use the Losmandy PortaJib Traveller.

All of these demands a professional tripod fluid head and sticks for heavy loads!

H;)

Yeah, that is pretty much what I was looking at. Right now I just have the HVX but plan on adding more as I progress. I figured I might as well go for the heavier rated heads now then have to re-buy later.

Would the 526 have any performace issues with the light weight HVX on top?

I drove around to a few dealers this weekend but no one had any heads other the the 501 to try out. I didn't really like the feel of the 501.

"Would the 526 have any performace issues with the light weight HVX on top?"

Perhaps... the 526's counterbalance mechanism utilizes an adjustable spring for camera weights between 8 and 15 kg... the HVX is under 3 kg.

I would you suggest to review the Bogen 516 instead... supports 22 lbs.

It says... The 516 is quipped with fluid cartridges, which provides continuous adjustable drag control. This system gives quite a wide range of friction control down to "zero drag" and operates on both pan and tilt axis...

Yeah, I figured that. I actually dropped the 526. One of the main reasons I was looking at it is cause the head alone is priced at 1450 and with sticks its 1600 package. I figured getting the package would be good but now that I think about it the 526 probably is overkill.

Now I am looking at the 516, 519 or Cartoni F100. Also trying to match some decent sticks. Looking at the Miller Solo DV or VJ (depending on the head).

The Cartoni and Miller combo come out at around 1700 so it is somewhat pricey and will require some changes after getting (the base plate and stock tie-down).

What are good sticks for the 516 and 519s or other sticks for the Cartoni?

I had a 501 head for my DVX, used it with the HVX, worked fine, EXCEPT...
The plate locking tab hits the bottom of the HVX and you can't fully lock it in.
I just busted a tripod leg, so I'm looking for new sticks, too. I want a nicer head to go with it. I'd avoid the 501 for sure, based on my personal experience with it over the past couple of years. It's just not "there" for the HVX.

Another issue with heads is panning and tilting. Since the HVX is HD, it's less forgiving, and the 501 takes a lot of effort to really get super smooth pans. Like I said, IMHO, the 501 is nice, but just not "there" for the HVX. Especially with a ton of extras attached to it.

I wish I could help more here - my new tripod is still in transit. I've decided to give the Libec LS-55 a shot - it was given an outstanding review in these forums by a few different people. They have preferred it to the 503. I'll know tomorrow how it feels, but I won't be comparing it to any Bogen/Manfrotto as I don't one one.

Ted,

What did you get your libec system for?

How about the Libec ls 22 or ls 38.

Heard anything about these.

Anyone know if B&H allows for people to tryout equipment in store? I hear they are very strict and rarely let anyone touch product until they buy.

i LOVE that 526/3193 combo! is it overkill for a single hvx - HELL YES! but what if one day you get a redrock, rails, follow focus, mic mounts and all that, you'll be glad you have it! and if you get a jib, it'll support it without blinking...

Off to the side of the camcorders, at the corner window there is a collection of sticks and heads and even a small jib. When I went I was able to test out all the tripod heads and fiddle with the legs a bit. Even had a couple dollies that my rep encouraged me to stand on  Few were beat up and broken, and there are models that they sell that might not be on display, but its a good selection for hands on browsing. I was gonna settle for a 501, but then saw it, tested it, saw the 516, tested it and got that. :)

Now if you are wondering if they'd bring up something not on display for you to fiddle with, I'm not so sure they'd accomodate.

i just got my 516 and 3193 legs two days ago.....BIG DIFFERENCE....it's smooth and the pans are nice. it supports 22lbs as well. i may go with a brevis adaptor in the future but right now i'll probably just get an 8ft or 12ft crane to put on it. i got my tripod for a little under $1k.
