Tripod or MIC? Which should I spend on first?

I have about 700 dollars to use to accessorise my DVX100A. I am debating which I should get first a decent mic or a tripod. I am leaning more towards the tripod but just thought Id get some more input from the board. Thanks

i would say tripod, i mean you can have wobbly bouncy shitty image with good sound, (ha) or just have a nice steady image with decent sound, tripod isway more important in my book, but thats just me..

Do you have a UV-filter to protect the lens?
I should start to bye a mic. I use Sennheiser K6/ME64

Yeah first thing I bought with the DVX was UV Filter, EVS said I couldnt leave the store without it! But I believe it was money well spent.

It depends what you plan to do next, as far as shooting. If you don't know, wait until you do.

I would buy the UV first :) then a decent XLR mic. I hear some of the lower end AT's are pretty capable.

Until you can afford something better, I would then buy a top end consumer tripod. No, it won't be amazing, but with a camera as light as a DVX a fluid effect head can still be very smooth. If you then start using a proper pro Fluid head tripod you will never look back to the cheap one, but a $100 tripod WILL the camera still until you can upgrade. You can then use the $100 tripod as a backup or to hold a second camera for event work.

Personally I would go with A good fluid head tripod. Unless you can settle with using a $14 dollar steady cam untill you can save up for the tripod... Don't be afraid to spend a lot for a good head. Also keep in mind how low you want your legs to go or how high. good luck.

Looking to make a short film within the next couple months or so. I may even hold off til when I get my tax refund to add on to the 700 dollars budget I already have. So should I splurge for a good fluid head or go for sound with Senheisser set up?

What should be a priority steadiness and maybe rent the sound? Or decent sound and renting the tripod?

Looks like the mic you're looking at (ME64/K6 combo) runs about $410 and you'll also want an XLR cable. I'm not sure what tripod you're looking at by maybe check out what the rental on either item is. Buy one, rent the other. I'm assuming you've done the research on the mic you want. I have the ME64/K6 Combo and it's treated me well. I'm sure there are people out there that will recommend others. You need to try them out if you can and see how they respond to your needs. You could even look into renting both the tripod and mic to make sure you like them before you buy.

No, not unless I have the camera vehicle mounted or if I am shooting in a windy area.

I am shooting a doc right now that I will not-very-humbly say sounds and looks pretty good, and I spent about $700 total on tripod and mics.

I got a Bogen 501 head with BPRO3001 sticks for around $250, bought a Audio-Technica AT835b for $240, and a wired lav for a little over $200.

I envy the size of your balls.

Buying a mic is kind of hard at first because it takes alot of research. No Single mic will work for all situations. A fluid head will ALWAYS do you good. Besides, getting the mic is just the start. You then need a Boompole, shockmount, softie etc. etc. I would rent mics until you're knowledgeable enough to be able to use it correctly AND know which one would even be good for you. As for a head, get the 503.
