tripod on a airplane.

I have to fly to Vegas for a convection next month, and I was wondering if anybody had any packing suggestions for my tripod. In the past I had a porta brace soft case, but the air lines dinged one of my legs. >:( I played hell trying to get them to replace it, so I would rather not go through it again. Well I can’t afford a real case so I was thinking about a hard case for a golf bag with foam inside. Any other ideas would be great. mike

Re: tripod on a airplane.

Are you going to NAB? You should get a Hard Case to protect the tripod. I would always use hard cases for equipment if traveling via plane because like someone said earlier about hard camera cases, the folks at the airport is just going to throw your stuff around...its not theirs so why should they care...thats going to be their attitude.

Shooter I wish I would be there for NAB, but I am going to be 2 weeks early. I guess I will have to find something else to do there. ;D

sfogden, I glad you mentioned the skb case. I was just looking at a few of those on ebay before I checked my mail. Which model did you get? I'm looking to get 2 bogen 503/3181 maybe three in one case. Do you think there is enough room?

Re: tripod on a airplane.

I got the 'Standard Golf Case' - 10" inner diamater. Two maybe, not three. I went to the local golf discount store & laid thing out to see what would fit. SKB also makes a 12" diamater golf case. That extra 2" in diamater adds nearly half again (44%) the volume, and that should handle the three tripods.
