tripod head witha sled?

Rich Lee

I shoot Pirates.
I dont know what its called or where to get one. its basicly a sled on a tripod head that lets you do little pushins without moving the tripod or having to dolly. its controled by a little wheel on the side... i think its used where they are tight on something and the want to do subtle pushins. whats it called? where can i get one?

Re: tripod head witha sled?

It called a camera slider or sometimes a slider plate. I've seen them in sectionns up to 36", but in the film industry. Never seen a lighter DV version, but maybe they exist. Not sure where to buy, but can rent from many high end camera shops and grip/elec houses. For DV applications, you may want to try Abel Cinetech http://www.abelcine.com/ or Moviola http://www.moviola.com/

Another note, when using one, they add a lot of weight and alter your center of gravity significantly. Consider using a dolly or definitely sandbag your tripod.
