Trimming SubClips ??

When I capture things I shoot, I usually do a CAPTURE TAPE, with the DV Detection Scene checked.  Then I get a bunch of clips that I drag one by one in the trimmer and I select the good parts and I make subclips with them with a significant name, so it makes the editing a lot easier after, having "cleaned" clips (subclips in fact).

For those who don't know, subclips are not actual files on the harddisks (even if you can see them in your media bin), they are only virtual entities that are linked to the original clips.  There are advantages about that (saving disk space, you can "enlarge or reduce" the duration of a subclip and you'll then get what was in the original clip, etc).

MY PROBLEM is that once my subclips are defined, I would like to keep them only on my harddisk, and get rid of the original clips.  In other words, I would like Vegas "trim" (duration trimming I mean here) the original clips so they only reflect the subclips duration.  I hope my explanation is understandable (my english is not very good sorry about that).  I want to do that because when archiving projects, I want to keep the clips used so I can open the .VEG again and re-work in it later if needed, but if I have to keep all the original clips it will be HUGE (a lot of MBs).

Anyone knows a function in Vegas to do that?  Or a special magic trick ??! ;)

Re: Trimming SubClips ??

I just seen that whe I save a project I can check COPY AND TRIM MEDIA WITH THE PROJECT.  But this will only keep the clips that are in the timeline I think..not the clips that are in the media bin associated with that project but not in the timeline....?  I have to do tests, if anyone knows don't be shy ;) else I'll post later what I can find about it

Re: Trimming SubClips ??

This script is really nice, however with basic scripting that comes with Vegas, you can render regions to new clips. This has to be done with the timeline though. I know Speed Razor used to allow you to cut up your clips in the media bin, then you could delete what you didn't want.. Vegas is a bit more quirky this way but it can be done by cutting the clip on the timeline and rerendering to new clips.. this way you can name your clips as well.. or use the suggested script.

Re: Trimming SubClips ??

Thanks for your replies. I've try many things and here are my conclusions :

1) I tried this Veggie-toolkit script and it only works wih region defined in the timeline; if I define regions in the trimmer, the script don't see them. I tried to define the region in the trimmer for my clips, then drop them all in the timeline, but their respective regions are not applied to the timeline, they stay at the clip level. Do you know a way to create timeline regions automatically from clips regions ? If so, it could be a really nice solution.

2) I tried to create subclips with the trimmer, then drop all the subclips from the media bin to the blank timeline and save project with SAVE AND TRIM MEDIA WITH THE PROJECT. well...it works but the clips are saved with the original clips'name, not the subcips significant names. Not a good solution.

I guess if we can't "upsize" the regions from clip level to timeline level, I'll have to drop all clips in the timeline and define the region directly in the timeline, then running the veggie-script or trying some vegeas built-in scrips as Chenopup suggest.

What may happen too is that someday I'll lose patience and I'll code a script that create files from subclips in a given folder, reproducing as well on the hard disk the hierarchy of the media bin ;D I worked as a C++ programmer for 4 years, but I did'nt tried the Vegas API neither dotNet framework, so it would need a little learning time.

But what do YOU guys do when you're back from shooting with 4 or 5 tapes and start editing process ? capture it all and do something like we're taling here ? Capture exactly what's needed (using a real vtr deck I guess o avoid over-using the dvx heads...) ? Tell me your method of work !

Re: Trimming SubClips ??

I've got so much drive space that it doesn't make much sense to go through the effort of logging and batch capturing. The capture program separates clips, so it's no problem deleting anything you don't want if you want to conserve space after you capture a whole tape.

Re: Trimming SubClips ??

I keep copies of the finished projects on tape or as AVIs on DVD. I also keep all of the original tapes, of course.

Re: Trimming SubClips ??

I do the same thing as David--capture the whole tapes, and edit. Hard drives are so cheap these days and I *hate* scrubbing through tape--it reminds me of all-nighters doing linear editing in a sterile edit suite and stumbling out into the daylight in the morning. However, I also archive the raw clips (only those that are used on the timeline) and the VEG file on DVDs.

Re: Trimming SubClips ??

I used to do that -- keep all of the raw files and .veg files -- but then I figured that if I have to make a change, it's generally fairly small, and I can work with the finished project and make the changes where they need to be.

If you think about it, it's not that much different than working with mixed down tracks.

Re: Trimming SubClips ??

I like having the backup and I hate having to go back to tapes. Plus, I'm a huge digital packrat. I still have an awesome collection of 3.5" floppies. ;D

Re: Trimming SubClips ??

Depends on the project.. smaller projects / no $$, get the straight to tape archive. If it's a larger project, I charge an archive fee, this covers a hard drive capable of holding all of their media including raw footage if necessary.. I also back up .veg files, re-rendered .avis, image and audio files on CD or DVD as well.
