Trim editor

To mention cross fades proves to me that you don't get it.

No, I think you may not quite get why I bring it up.

As I have already stated every time you use the trim editing tools you must reposition the cursur to view your edit. Obvioulsy to make sure to don't have a funky jump cut. You must always switch between triming tools with keyboard short cuts or select the tool from the tool bin.
As I've said several times, these things are true in Premiere. They are not true in Vegas. (There is no tool bin.)

All this is eliminated with the trim editor.
I know, which is why it makes the trim editor a great tool for Premiere, but it's not needed for Vegas. Anything the trim editor does is simply done in a different way.

Cross fades? For cuts only editing and trimming? That is not to say cross fades are never needed. If I were trying to achieve cross fades in my editing then I woud indeed be changing my editing technique.

I am not sure why you could not just simply state "Post the video tutorial so I can see exactly what you are doing. Maybe there is an advantage to the trim editor that I am not aware of".

Why couldn't that be your response? That is what I would do as a moderator rather than insisting I am wrong (or anyone else). If the exact same thing (I mean exact) can be duplicated in Vegas then you could show us. My friend thought the trim editor would be a tad bit easier than using the trimmming tools.

No. What I said was that the trim editor does indeed have advantages vis-a-vis the Premiere workflow, but that the Vegas workflow is such that it's not needed . . . which is why it isn't there in the first place. I was simply trying to get you to understand that, and in the spirit of fostering learning, I was attempting to nail down exactly what you wanted to do so that I could tell you how it's done in Vegas -- and thus you could pass it on to your Vegas-using friend.

As for my "moderator" duty of encouraging you, I did ask you specifically what you wanted to do in the trim editor, but when I told you how to duplicate the same thing in Vegas, your response was "why I should I bother with that when I've got the trim editor?" So, I don't think that's what you were really looking for.

As for the crossfades, one of the gold-star benefits of the trim editor in Premiere is managing transitions -- where they begin, where they end, etc. The way Premiere handles transitions, that's a real advantage; doing it on the timeline absolutely sucks, and the trim editor makes it much easier. But it's also completely unnecessary for the way Vegas handles transitions. It's not the actual crossfades themselves which are the point, but the way they're created and managed -- the mechanics of the timeline -- and the term for it is "automatic crossfade." It's one of the ways Vegas handles things on the timeline, differently from Premiere, which makes a trim editor unneeded.

But by all means, you should make the video and post it in the Premiere section as a guide for using the trim editor. I'm sure many Premiere editors will enjoy it and find it useful. It just won't have much relevance to Vegas users, so it wouldn't belong in this section.

My friend had the trial of version of Vegas Pro 8. He will be downloading the trial version of Vegas 9.

How can we avoid having to manualy move the curosor to the trim edit spot to preview the trim edits? Does Vegas 9 do it automatically? Can you select the amount of pre roll before the trim edit spot? This is what I/we want to know how to do.

I told you, above. Create region around the spot and loop playback.

Just as a suggestion, you might have your friend post here directly; there are plenty of experienced Vegas users who can help him with whatever he needs to know.

I take it the region would have to be changed for every trim edit performed, right? If that is the case then the statement that you made about Vegas not needing a trim editor is not 100% true. Like I said, I can use the trimming tools with Premiere Pro but I then have to manualy keep repositioning the cursor. With the tim editor I avoid this.

Perhaps my friend will post one day. He is not into disscusion forums or video editing as much as myself.

And, once again, instead of just wanting to learn how to do it, you turn it into a contest.

My friend seen my trim editor and thought it was a nice way to trim. I make a trim hit play, make another tirm hit play. We now we can trim on the timeline but I thought Vegas 9 might have a tim editor. That is all really.
