Triggering a 430EX II Speedlite with the 580 EX II and turning off the Master

So I want to trigger the 430 with the 580 but have the 580's flash off. According to the 580 manual, this is possible.

I make the change to 580, the display changes and OFF appears, but the flash still fires.

Is it possible my 580 is defective, or is there something else preventing me from turning off the 580 Flash?

Thanks.

What camera are you using? On some cameras you have to disable the flash firing in the camera menu.

I'm using a 5D, not the 5D Mark II. The 580 can't be controlled from the camera menu, but I did find a custom function for turning off the flash.

Doing that, though, prevents the 580 from triggering the 430.

The 580 still fires if I switch from ETTL to Manual mode.

yes, the custom function is what I was reffering too. I could be wrong but I believe that the flash has to be in ETTL in order to trigger the 430. I've called Canon about this type of situation and they were very helpful about it.
