hey guys,
i have a question about how you would light a car scene. i dont have a car jib . i plan on shooting a car scene just the shot of a couple inside a car. how would i light the scene. its at night time and i want to get the effect that cars are driving by, passing them. would i move objects in front of the lights to get the effect?
-thanks

well i haven't done this yet but i have played with it a bit and i'll be using next time i do a car thing...

goto home depot and get one of the GE flourescent lights.

it is in its own plastic case wtih a plug and a white guard over the bulb itself.

it comes in different qualities and the ones i got are called "basic"

its 18" long.

goto radio shack and get an inverter, it plugs into your cigarette lighter.

play around with putting one or two of these lights around your car, under the dash, on the dash etc.

IF YOU ARE DOING THIS IN A MOVING CAR be really careful you don't get distracted and do something stupid like driving into a light pole.

get some gaffers tape and double tape the light down.

i would practice on the passenger side if you feel you need to do it while the car is moving.

when a car is behind you, the light from their headlights is reflected in a bar of light accross the eyes of the driver. if you moved a light around in the back, you could get a cool effect of cars passing behind. just an idea.

Get a wide lamp shade that can spin on when unscrewed. Cut patterns into this shade and spin it while filming at randowm intervals....

Possibly give the illusion that cars are cruising by

in the Godfather part I, for the scene where michael is going to the "meeting", they hung lit paper balls (to simulate headlights) all around the car and swung them gently back and forth. for a passing car, you could just move a light by the face of the actor... sound would be the important thing for that effect.
