every few years have their own style. ie: lens flare has been cool since 2005.
what kind of other trends had been already?

I would put lens flare as cool since oh....Easy Rider!

Other late cool trends:

High shutter speed a la Saving Private Ryan

Super Saturated colors a la Domino (barf)

Flash frames in commercials and movie flashbacks...etc

Magic Bulleting everything into the ground (can look good or grotesque)

Super slo-mo moments (cool since Peckinpah)

Fish-eye/super wide angle shots (Requiem for a Dream et al)

Crazy body-cams for shooting face of actor as he/she walk around

Reverse narative movies (good when the forward narative sucks)

Others please add more!!!

This might degenerate into a film cliche thread but that's ok...

out.

Some trends that I find overused...

Paint splatters

Silohuette styles

The urban posterized look, i.e. Sketchers ad, McD's pirates ad, Honda civic ad, et al

Mainstream rap/hip hop/R&B music videos - once you've seen one, you've seen them all, ya know, the scenes that are all blue, then all red, and everyone is sweating profusely, but their hair and makeup is perfect and champagne always pours in slow-mo...

Movies about missing children that were never really there, i.e. Flightplan, Freedomland, The Missing...seriously, what's up with these?

The indy rock style permeating everything that is design...I still don't get this

Eh, I'm sure there are more...pointless slow-mo for sure :(

Damn, I'm just about to embark on building a music video and I was gonna use ALL those effects. Oh, let's not forget GLOW as well.

Guess I'd better just go back to the original plan - bleached bypass. That's rarely used, right?

I think slo-mo bleach bypass with a hint of fish-eye and a splash of shaky cam should get you the next MTV music video award.

A few current trends, not saying they're good or bad as I use a few now & then:

3d stroke and growing paint strokes
urban grit
paint drips
integrating heavy 3d into mograph
stationary background layer with elements on top in 2.5D space
lomo treatments

I just watched Anders Schroder's (DFORM1) new '06 reel, click on the first pic, and you can definately see the heavy 3D influence.

What's a "lomo treatment"?

Lomo is the mimicing of old russian Lomo still cameras. Basically it's that vignette effect where the edges of the frame fall off to dark and the middle of the frame has a blown out color look.

Lomo sounds like slo-mo :D

LOMO LIKE IN THE NEW CHRISTINA A. MUSIC VIDEO?

a few more specific hip hop music video trends are...

super slow motion as cigar smoke comes out of someones mouth.

"spinners" on escalades spinning in slow motion.

ass shaking...

the hype williams "put all the b-roll into the letterbox" look

kai- yeah...3d stroke is all over...

I recently saw a commercial for a tap water product which has the effect that people are in a normal room and they swim through the room. The hair moves like its in water and stuff...most likely they were swimming in a deep pool and just keyed out the background.
It's been in a few music videos too, but i cant remember wat specific videos.

They might be in a zero gravity green room also. It is really hard to key them in a pool, even if swimming the will be bubbles and the caustices are hard to erase.

I was always dumbstruck as to why people did this, the first time I saw it I thought something was wrong with my TV  seriously...
