Tree Carving

Here is something that might be hard to do. I am going to be shooting a scene in the woods at a very old tree. I am not able to physically carve the fake initials of the characters into the bark, so does anyone have any ideas on how I can get the look of carved initials inside a heart in the bark of the tree?

Thanks

the easiest solution would be to show the real tree in wide shots (where it's reasonable for the carving to not be visible) then cut to a fake tree (or another suitable real tree) with the carving for close-ups.

But if your shots or story won't allow that, then I'd go for 'tree make-up' - some sort of latex/clay/whatever patch that can be temporarily attached to the real tree. But the colour and textre will need to match the real tree exactly to avoid looking fake

you could carv the initials into another tree, shoot those initials, then just shoot your scenes with the real tree as normal. then in post roto scope the carved initials and place them on the real tree using a mask. if there is movement of the camera then you will have to do some motion tracking. so try to shoot in a way that makes it easier for u. that should work.
