Treatments

I hate this stuff.

Got to write a Treatment, to pitch to an author - to see what he think's of my concept. Turning his novel series into a Television Pilot.

The thing is, I've tried this. It just turn's out like a re-write of his novel. Just very descriptive, and with a few shots in it. I'm finding it very hard.

Has anyone tried this - or got any tips?

Hi, Ki-Ki. The first time I did this I found it to be quite the claustrophobic experience. I ran into the same problem as you. At that point I took a deep breath and asked myself what the difference is between the two mediums. Novel=Tell me. Screenplay=Show me. Usually a novel is driven by action that takes place inside a characters head. (The Mindscape of Dramatic Action) A screenplay is much more visual. (The Images of Dramatic Action). I'm not pretending that this is any sort of earth-shattering realization but when I took a moment to break down my project in that way I found myself feeling free to create "this version" of "that story". I now had license to SHOW what was being TOLD or THOUGHT.

Let the medium be your guide. Like Robert Frost said, "Free verse is like playing tennis without a net."
