Travelling from PAL to NTSC often. Which camera to get?

Hello,

I was thinkingof getting HVX200 to shoot some things, but the PAL/NTSC problem stops me from taking out the credit card.

Which camera would you recommend to get for the person, who spends half a year in PAL region and half a year in NTSC?

I shoot short feature films only. Now minidvcam is doing good, but I need something more technlologically advanced. HVX would be perfect, but, alas, no PAL/NTSC switch.

Is there anything close to HVX with such a switch? Or should I stop bothering about the region problem and just get the camera?

The Canon HX A1 offer this feature, the cost is $500 and the modification has to be made by a Canon center.

As Sirocco said, if you need both, the A1 can do both with a factory add-on.

Beyond that, if you really want the HVX, and you are only shooting feature films, then get the one that supports the market your films are going to. What is your delivery and where is it going to?

Or, you can get an HPX500 and have a muscled up HVX that does pal and ntsc :) :)

No way with HPX500

But Canon XH A1 looks nice, but I guess I'm loosing a lot in quality, when rejecting the HVX200...

Nothing close to HVX200 qualitywise in the same pricerange, but with region switching?

Or is there any way to overpass the region problem with HVX200?

The A1 and the HVX have comparable picture quality. Different features, different cameras. But, both are capable of fine results. It just depends on what you need. Get the camera that is best suited for your needs.

Regarding pal vs. ntsc... Converting one way or the other can be done in post, but (in my opinion) it's not really recommended.

I am of the understanding that NTSC dvd's will play in *most* pal dvd players. It doesn't generally work the other way around.

Then, there are many dvd players that you can purchase that do both.

Again, what is your output going to be, and where will your product be going. Will it be going to both 60hz and 50hz regions simultaneously? Or, will you be doing Pal work when there, and NTSC work when in NTSC land?

Thanks for the replies.

AXH1 looks pretty tempting, but, argh... the possibilities HVX200...

Is that really this troublesome to do the PAL/NTSC conversion in postproduction?
Never done that before.

The idea is to be able to show in NTSC region the material, shot in PAL region.

I wouldn't say PAL/NTSC conversion is a problem. If you're using FCS, it's just a matter of sending a second batch to Compressor before leaving the office. I agree it's a little more work but since you're not going to make all your shots in both formats, it's something that you would have to do anyway.

Take the HVX.

i live and work on a PAL country and have been doing all my jobs on ntsc for ten years. the tv stations here transcode on the fly just before broadcast it, so everybody produces in ntsc. never had a problem.
