Traveling to West Africa

It's been years since I had a vacation. And I really want/need to do some research for a film I'm trying to make. So I'm trying to get myself to West Africa (Sierra Leone, Liberia, etc.) for 3-4 weeks in the fall, to explore and investigate and spend a few days relaxing.

The problem? It's freakishly expensive to get there! Cheapest flights I've found (from L.A.) are $2700 round trip! Whooooooaaaaa now. No good.

So anyone who's been to this region, got any advice on bringing that price down? Any other tips of any sort? I'd be willing to volunteer and work for a while during my stay. I already looked into grants but all the ones I found required you to be a graduate student to apply.

We looked at Africa for honeymoons and back then airfare was $2k a person.

I hate to say it, but your best option to bring the fare down... go work at an airline and then be able to use your benefits to fly.... Part time jobs as a baggage handler are an awesome way to capitalize on benefits.

My brother is in the hotel industry and I use his benefits all the time when I travel. My fiance was in the airline industry and that is what she told me to do if I wanted to try to get us anywhere overly exotic; needless to say, we're honeymooning in Mexico now :)

But... if you're there, then HERE is also the far side of the Earth! Unless you were referring to how it's a poverty-stricken, war-torn death-trap, of course, in which case yeah, sure. But where isn't???

Jeremy, interesting advice... unfortunately I don't see myself having the time to rack up any hours working as a bag tosser in the near future. On the other hand we're maybe doing some work for Hilton... hmm... gears spinning...

you could try the ol' courier trick. i dont know how to become a courier, but apparently thats how you get cheap flights. the only problem is you dont get to choose where you go, and its unpredictable when you'll go.

Yeah, I tried to get into doing that when I was in college, but it's actually kind of tricky. I wish I'd gotten to do it. Now, however, I have a specific place I want to go and a fairly specific time I need to get there.
