Travel with gear (Flying)

I'm about to do some serious traveling, off course I'd like to bring as much gear as I can. My carry on is around 33 lbs fully packed. Most airlines allow from 11 to 17 lbs. How many of you have been stopped with a lot of gear (overweight) and asked to check in the carry on? Is it possible to talk your way around it?

I've traveled a lot earlier but never thought of the overweight and have only been weighed one on my carry on. It was overweight but I remember they let it slip that time. This time I'm going to more remote countries and don't want to be stuck on a an airport having to check in gear worth a real amount of money.

Do you guys have any travel tips & tricks?

you wont get stopped because of weight. just make sure it can fit in overheads. Your gear bag should be no larger than the average carry-on luggage. The dimensions most airlines give are nonsense. Most carry-ons are much bigger. International flights are never a problem because the compartments are large but you may have an issues with small regionals and puddle jumpers depending where you are going. most tickets will have the aircraft listed on the ticket or reservation so it may pay to research and break down the gear ahead of time if it is a prop plane. When you check in keep the carry on out of the eye line of the person giving the boarding passes. It's better to check if you have to as you get on the plane on the jetway so you won't get charged additional fees and your bag will be waiting for you at the exit at the end of the flight. The key is always to get on your flight early so that you can grab the overhead before the flight gets full. Even if your bag fits, if it is a full flight you can be SOL and forced to check.

Out of sight out of mind. I travelled much with two pelican tsa approved 1510 cases. Since I was lazy I'd often stack one on top of the other to roll onto the plane and ALWAYS got complaints from the airline. However if I just carried one in each hand, it was never a problem.
