Travel Tripod Ttouble...

Well thats this weeks tongue out of the way!.....

I'm having problems finding a decent LIGHTWEIGHT, COMPACT tripod for use with the HVX while traveling. I took a tripod with me for a 5 week to India late last year and it turned into a nightmare what with the weight and bulk. I ended up leaving it in the UK for a China trip which meant that my footage suffered. I've taken it on a few trips around Europe i.e. Italy and Greece but again weight and bulk were an issue.

I'm off to Japan in a few weeks and NEED to get some sort of support. I'm prepared to compromise some height and rigidity for something I could pack in my KATA HB-205.

Any thoughts suggestions greatly appreciated!

I just came back from a 5 week trip to indonesia and japan, i used a manfrotto 503 and some small 055PROB manfrotto legs. When i open the head these legs are a close fit in my suitcase.
When shooting i leave the suitcase at the hotel and carry the tripod by hand and the camera in a backpack.
Its really not perfect but thats the best compromise i found. You might wanna try it before you buy it.....

Peace

A little trick - I know its not a tripod, but for handheld shots I have put together a screw that fits the bottom of the camera, and have a small but strong chain attached to the screw about five feet long. I attached the screw to the bottom of the camera and STEP on the chain, tightening the chain and stabilizing the CAMERA. It cost a couple bucks and you can fit it in your pocket. NO, its not a tripod but does really stablize the camera when you dont have one. . . .

I would recommend the Feisol CT-3402 carbon fiber legs. Folded length is only 17" and it weighs only 1.2 KG. Pair those legs with a smallish head you'll be in good shape. I would try to go as small and lite as possible............. something like the Bogen 701RC2.

Good luck and let us know how your backpacking trip went. I'm conisdering doing the same with a smaller camera: HV20 which I think willl be an ideal backpacking camera.

Gitzo 3540 LS (3.8lbs / 1.72kg) + Cartoni hidv (3.7lbs / 1.7kg)
very sturdy, light and fairly short when folded.

Interested in travel tripod. Had the Bogen 701 RC1 head and hated it. Thinking of goingwith the miller solo dv cf and the cartoni hidv head. Do we know if the cartoni hidv is sold as a head only?

It seemed too small. I had a DVX with matte box and one filter (usually) and it felt like that was it's limit for smooth (or over it's limit). It was just clunky and that is the last place you want to struggle.
