Travel Mattes...

What is a travel matte used for again? I don't have my book with me as I am at work! Do I use it if my subject matter is in motion (moving video)?

Re: Travel Mattes...

Traveling matte is a moving matte. It's to select an area to composite one image over another.
If you're pulling a bluescreen key you're creating a traveling matte on the fly.
If you're rotoscoping (animating a matte or grabage matte) then you're creating a traveling matte.

Re: Travel Mattes...

Ok well how about this. I import a picture of myself and use a garbage or travel matte to cut myself out of the rest of the picture. What do I need to do to switch between actually seeing me and seeing just an outline of where I was? You follow what I am asking? How can I leave an outline or white background. I don't think I would want it transparent. But if the background were black then my picture was layered on top of that. How do I remove my image but leave a white outline or background from where the image was. Then I would have to use an effect to reveal the picture back to being visible again. Its a cool effect, I am just trying to figure out how I can do something like this in FCP. Would I have to layer my picture on 2 tracks and apply a matte to one of them to trace and cut out the image leaving a hole where the visible image would be? I think I may have just answered my own question.....hmmmmm!

Re: Travel Mattes...

Depends on what you really want to do. You can layer on top of white solid and create a matte of yourself or you can lay white on top and use your matte to cut it out.
As teh complexity of your effects grow you may need to consider After Effects or Commotion.
