Travel Drive

Alright so there are a few questions here...

I was looking at getting a simple external hard drive to put whatever video I'm working on each week. I plan on having it backed up on two other secure sources.

I was looking at Newegg and was thinking about just getting an enclosure and a hard drive and just using that set up.

I've never used anything but firewire 800 when editing in FCP, is firewire 400 quick enough to work properly if all my source footage and everything is on the external drive? I know that usb 2.0 doesn't have enough buffer space or something so you can't work with footage on a drive with that connection.

Also one of the enclosures didn't need ac power and said it would be take power from the usb or firewire bus. Would that slow things down compmared to if I just had ac power or will it not make a difference?

Thanks guys,
Matt

Not sure what format you are working in, but I work in DVCPRO HD all the time with firewire 400 and don't have problems. Also, Smartdisk Drives are powered through the firewire, and it doesn't seem to affect it negatively. It's also nice not to feel tied to an outlet!
