Travel Adapters

Hi there fellow DX users, had a question that I am hoping that our more well traveled friends can help with...
just got a gig in Peru shooting for a week but will need to be doing daily same day edits. The question is what is the best solution for powering a macbook pro and an external hard drive. The power is 220v not American 120. Looking at power converters and such, I am learning that most of the stuff at Amazon and other sites will handle things like blow dryers and other heat related items - but not so much heavier usage stuff like a computer. I would need a solution to power my laptop, hard drive (Iomega 1TB Firewire), and chargers for my HCM150 and 7D. Any suggestions as far as products to get would be appreciated. thanks so much as always for the incredibly helpful advice amongst this group.

Thanks - Chris

Most modern electronics handle the power conversion automatically. All you likely really need is a simple mechanical plug adapter.

Look at the power supplies on your electronics, for what the input voltage reads. If it says something like 110v only, then yes you'll need an electronic converting power supply. But if it says 110-240v, then all you'll likely need is a plug adapter.

Peru looks like it uses the American two-blade plug, at 60Hz power, but at 220v. They also use the two-round-pin plug. So get a round plug, and check your power supplies. The HMC150 is universal, and your laptop and hard drive power supplies are almost definitely universal, and I'd wager the 7D's power supply is universal too.

Indeed, Barry is correct. And both the Canon power supplies for the 7D and 1DIV are 110-240v, so you should just need a plug adapter, if you even need that.

Yup, been to Mexico, Iceland, Africa, Amsterdam, etc, the Mac works fine with the right plug adapter. No converter needed. Check the voltage requirements on the hard drive/battery charger/etc and you'll probably find the same range.
