Trapcode Particular Help: How to Animate a Light Wall?

Hello guys,

I'm an After Effects novice, and I may be biting off more than I can chew here, but I need to create a show open and I'd like to animate a light wall--as seen in Belief's Zoom video. Check it out: http://trapcode.com/gallery/Belief_Zoom.mov

I've been fiddling with particular and I've been able to at least create text with spheres by using a layer emitter and the grid settings. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to animate the particles to simulate the individual bulbs turning on--there's just no controlling the individual particles.

Can anyone help me with the settings? Do you suggest any alternative methods?

Thanks Guys.

I don't think the light walls were made in Particular. They are probably 3D. According to Trapcode's site, they said that the particles were done in Particular, no mention of the light wall.

If you have Lux you could make a physical light wall and make a grid out of it, there are a lot of different methods depending on what end results you need.

Actually, I do remember the Belief guy mentioning that the light walls were done in Particular.

What specifically are you trying to do that you cannot do? Do they need to randomly turn on and off?

A simpler approach would be to use CC Ball Action, rather than Particular.

Garymachine,

I'd like to be able to control the order at which they light up, and get a realistic light-on/flicker effect.

How would you suggest I use CC Ball? It doesn't have many options...

I've been agonizing over how to achieve this with plugins, but I just might have to do it as oneinfiniteloop suggested, bulb by bulb. In this case, is there an option to arrange the different lights in grid?

Thanks guys.

You can do light walls in Particle Illusion and import them in AE. Never really used Particular so can't help you there.

The Grid in Particular has either Periodic Burst or Traverse emission. Neither of which are "random". Either all at once (periodic) or one-by-one (traverse).

BUT, if you use a custom particle of a pre-comped layer that flickers on, you can use a Time Sampling of "Start at Birth - Loop", and each particle in the grid will flicker on at its birth.
