Transparency in Flash?

I'm new to Flash, so bear with me please? I'm creating a an animation for my website's header section, but want it to have a transparent background. Can I do this, or at least export it as a gif so that I can get the desired effect? The default seems to be a square background, but I just want the round image in the center to show.

The default white background you see in flash is actually transparent by default. Its not the flash movie that's your problem but the presence of the wmode attribute with its value set to transparent in the html object and/or embed tag(s) which receive the flash swf file.

That totally lost me, so I did a quick Google on wmode. Still sort of lost, but not completely now. Thanks, I should be able to struggle through that. Now, sort of on the same subject... I have a square video behind a round object. The round object is a lens, the background is transparent, and the glass of the lens is semi transparent revealing the video in the back. Is it fairly simple to mask out everything outside the lens so that it is transparent?
