Transitions not working

I am new to editing 24p in FCP 3.0. Why is it that when I add a transition (basic dissolve) between two clips it only lasts about a second or so? If I try to extend the length of the dissolve it will not let me...sometimes it will not even let me add the transition. My clips are long enough, I know that is not the problem. What gives?

Re: Transitions not working

I dont have an exact answer, I have experienced the same thing in FCP4.0 but what I did was just trimmed the 2 clips that is being joined by a transition. In some cases I would just trim one of the clips and that seemed to work for me. If you double click the transition so that clip shows up in your Viewer you can select where you want the transition to start, at the begining of the clip, middle or end of the clip.

There might be a hidden clip wedged in between the main clip and the transition and that might be the reason your transition clip is small. I have had this happen to me too.

I just kept clicking my UNDO button until I get it back to where it was then start over with adding transitions.

Re: Transitions not working

I posted this same question somewhere in this forum and was told that my clip needed to have in and out points further from the edge of the clip. This was the case. In other words, for an experiment, go into your timeline, shorten your clip(s) you're having problems with, and see then if it works. If it does, it means you don't have enough clip space to overlap the length you desire. If you can't lengthen your clip, you must re-do the capture to cover the time it takes for your effect to overlap.

Re: Transitions not working

This happens due to FCP being a non-destructive editor. In other words, it assumes that when you put a clip into the timeline, you want every bit of that footage shown uninterrupted. So, it requires a 15 frame handle for all transitions. In other words, once you get the clip you want, add 15 frames to the beginning and end of it for transitions. FCP then uses these 15 frames in your transition so that the clip you want shown remains untouched.
