Transition time stuck at 1 frame. Won't change.

Like the title says, I have a cross dissolve that says it needs rendering. So I go render all, and I attempt to change the time.
It won't change, I enter a number, it goes back to one.
It won't let me change it to anything, why is this?
I am using Express for editing HDV footage...any ideas on how to fix this?

also....in my viewer, the video is fit to screen, but around it, it is transparent (checkerboard pattern), and it won't fill up the entir slug.

Make sure you have a large number of overlap frames. If the clips are just touching then it can't create a overlap transition.

Check that you're at 100% magnification and use the zoom (green) button to auto adjust the canvas window.

When I finally get the transition.....it won't center on the edit.
It gives me the error sound when I try to click it. There is no gap either leftover.

Bah....I suck at FCP.

Kabz,

when you apply a transition on the centre of an edit, you need extra frames in that clip so that the transition has frames it can use for overlap..ie the dissolve.

eg:

Say Clip A has in/out points set. if there are no frames left after the out point, the transition will have no frames to use for the "dissolve" to the next clip.

So you mean handles?

How can I add those?

Because I am used to the log and capture in FCP HD, but Express does auto clips for you in real time capture

To dissolve from one clip to another it means that for a moment you're going to see both clips at the same time.
To do this you need to place them in different video tracks and have them overlap by 12 or more frames. If you're using every scrap of your captured frames in a cut you'll have to shorten the real cut or don't use real dissolves.
