Transition FX

I have a clip that I want the image to "fade out" to transparency - instead of fading to black. Which standard effect would I use in FCP for that? I've tried: standard fade out, cross dissolve, etc and none of those seem to work. Any suggestions?

the only thing i can think of right now is to put 2 of the same clips on the timeline. One on V1 and one on V2. Do a dissolve and see if that goes to transparency

Transparency/Oppacity is used for revealing something that is underneath the effected clip or fading to black (no clip). If you don't have a clip under or a clip next to it to be (faded/dissolved) into, it will be black because there is nothing to see. Hope this makes sense, It is kind of hard to explain without showing you.
