transistion problems

I have noticed that when i apply a cross dissolve trasistion to clips, it will fade and then pop back to the orginal clip for a split second, before finishing the fade. Also when i slow a clip down (using command J), i set the clip to the desired speed, when i click OK it will push everything after away. How can i get it to just apply the setting and leave everything where it is?

1. Sounds like you don't have enough handles on the clips you are applying transitions to.
2. Take the clip you want to change speed to a higher track. Lock the others down. Make your speed change. OR do a fit to fill edit.
