Transferring Imovie Events and Projects to External HD

I would like to get my current Imovie projects and events off my Macbook Pro Hard drive.....and over to an External HD for editing. What are the steps, techfrineds? Can I safely delete the projects/events on my Macbook after transferring over?
Thanks

If you want the external drive held projects to load up in iMovie when you are done you will need to do the following trick (other wise you can just copy then willy nilly):

Close iMovie. Start copying your entire 'iMovies Events' to the root directory on your external. Let it get going (past the 'calculating' part) and then cancel it. This will create an 'iMovie Events' on your new drive (this folder has special properites and won't work if you use 'create a new folder') . Now look in the 'iMovie Events' copy on the external and remove all the sub directories. Now copy over the events you really want to archive. Do the same steps for 'iMovie Projects' if you want.

Now load iMovie with the drive mounted and you should be able to see both the local and external copies of your events/projects. Once this is done you can quit and remove the copies on your local drive.

Note that you can also edit right on an external drive if you want (great for laptops + large project).

WARNING - I would never recommend having just one copy of anything. All hard drives will die at some point. I have have 2 copies of all my data (time machine backups or all working macs, and then a series of mirrored raids for storage).

Good luck!
