transferring film from one HD to another

What is the safest way (steps) to transfer important footage...data from one Lacie to another Lacie without risking problems? Should I open FCP first, change the scratch disk destination to the new HD, and then move the folders from the old into the new HD, or vice versa, or what? This is for an indie feature film project that I started on the old Lacie, that already had stuff on it and now is running out of room, so I just got a new HD for it.

What I would do is - with FCP closed/quit - mount both drives on the desktop and literally drag and drop the folders from the old to the new, keeping the same folder structure on both drives. Then once you've finished dinner, gone to the gym, walked the dog, watched a movie and everything's copied, copy the name of the old drive, unmount it, change the name of the new drive to the old drive's name EXACTLY. That will avoid any re-linking madness when you open your project the first time. FCP will think it's the same drive.
