Transcoding Progressive?

I'm a pretty new owner of my dvx 100, While browsing through the menu's of encore 1.5 i noticed that i can transcode progressive or interlaced!

Will transcoding interlaced make all my progressive shooting redundant as it will now be interlaced or is there still a reason to shoot progressive?

And if i transcode progressive, will it make all my older interlaced footage look funny or jumpy, or will i just be losing 50% quality?

And if i transcode progressive, must it be set to no fields? both in encore and premiere?

Confused...

Thanks

Jimmy

Encoding progressive or interlaced doesn't have much difference.
But...if your MPEG2 file contains both "versions" then interlaced encoding is preferred, because encoder then treats both fields separately.
Progressive footage from DVX is "technically" interlaced but these different fields are "shot" in one moment of time, so treating them separately has no sense.
Encoding "progressive" takes usually less time - encoder takes one frame "as whole picture", not fields, but use it only when all of your footage is progressive scan.
In DVD player, there's no difference as far as I know.
If you transcode progressive then set no fields on both programs.

Thanks a lot, begining to wrap my head around it... Would be stupid to go to all the effort to make it progressive then just to ruin it at the end.

Basically, encode always "interlaced" and you can't go wrong. Encode "progressive" when you're sure all your footage is progressive.
This is simpler explanation I guess :-)

I have Encore 2.0 and can't get 24P footage to display properly. Anyone else have this problem? I get ghosting every few frames.
