trailer cutting

Hi everyone, I would like to dabble in trailer cutting just for my own interest in the field. My problem, which hopefully someone here can help me out with, is getting the film from the dvd to vegas. Or, if I already have a file of the film, say, Synecdoche, New York (from writer/director Charlie Kaufman), in MP4 format, when importing it into vegas, all that is available is the sound.

Now I don't know much about codecs, but I do know that I have quite a few on my PC and I haven't ever had any trouble playing anything in WMP, Quicktime, VLC, etc.

Help?
 
convert whatever you're trying to edit to AVI uncompressed, you're gonna get a huge file but at least you'll be able to work with it.
 
convert it with vegas? or with something else and then put the uncompressed avi into vegas?
