Tragedy in Asia

Unbelievable...current death toll tops 23,000 people in Asia...

It's hard to imagine the sheer devastation that came so swiftly and without warning. Hearing about something like this reminds me how lucky I am to have what I have and to be alive and well.

Prayers go out to those who are grieving

Re: Tragedy in Asia

Maybe P.K. could jump on and give us some news from Thailand? I think he's inland, but maybe he has an insiders prospective from the communities affected.

Re: Tragedy in Asia

And I was complaining about my vacation being over. :(

That whole earthquake/tsunami thing freaked me out. I dont understand how something that big can happen and no one knew or could give those poor people adequate warning.

I have not watched the news since yesterday morning before my road trip back home. Stuff like that adds cracks to my heart.

Re: Tragedy in Asia

Even San Diego is experiencing energy form this event.

EVALUATION
SOME ENERGY FROM YESTERDAYS TSUNAMI IN THE INDIAN OCEAN HAS
LEAKED INTO THE PACIFIC BASIN... PROBABLY FROM SOUTH OF THE
AUSTRALIAN CONTINENT. THIS ENERGY HAS PRODUCED MINOR SEA
LEVEL FLUCTUATIONS AT MANY PLACES IN THE PACIFIC. FOR
EXAMPLE...

50 CM CREST-TO-TROUGH AT CALLAO CHILE
19 CM CREST-TO-TROUGH AT IQUIQUE CHILE
13 CM CREST-TO-TROUGH AT PAGO PAGO AMERICAN SAMOA
11 CM CREST-TO-TROUGH AT SUVA FIJI
50 CM CREST-TO-TROUGH AT WAITANGI CHATHAM IS. NEW ZEALAND
65 CM CREST-TO-TROUGH AT JACKSON BAY NEW ZEALAND
18 CM CREST-TO-TROUGH AT PORT VILA VANUATU
06 CM CREST-TO-TROUGH AT HILO HAWAII USA
22 CM CREST-TO-TROUGH AT SAN DIEGO CALIFORNIA USA

HOWEVER... AT MANZANILLO MEXICO SEA LEVEL FLUCTUATIONS WERE AS MUCH AS 2.6 METERS CREST-TO-TROUGH... PROBABLY DUE TO FOCUSING OF ENERGY BY THE EAST PACIFIC RISE AS WELL AS LOCAL RESONANCES.

THIS IS TO ADVISE THAT SMALL SEA LEVEL CHANGES COULD CONTINUE TO BE OBSERVED ACROSS THE PACIFIC FOR THE
NEXT DAY OR TWO UNTIL ALL ENERGY FROM THIS EVENT IS
EVENTUALLY DISSIPATED.

THE PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER WILL ISSUE TSUNAMI BULLETINS FOR HAWAII AND OTHER AREAS OF THE PACIFIC.

THIS WILL BE THE ONLY BULLETIN ISSUED FOR THIS EVENT BY THE WEST COAST AND ALASKA TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER UNLESS CONDITIONS WARRANT. REFER TO THE INTERNET SITE HTTP://WCATWC.ARH.NOAA.GOV
FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Re: Tragedy in Asia

Yes, really really sad!!!
I know some people at Phatong Beach (Phuket) and on the Maledives.
Hope they still alive and in good conditions...

Re: Tragedy in Asia

it moved one entire island 100 feet to the southwest... imagine such a power!
Thoughts and prayers definitely with those people.

Re: Tragedy in Asia

There is some video online of the event throughout the 'ring of fire'. Scary scary mother nature can be. ONe minute you're sipping a Mai Tai and the next....

Always be looking.

Re: Tragedy in Asia

i don't want to get too religious, but is this the age of uncertainty? our (usa) world will not be the same. 2001 sadly marks a period in our history that took us back to the middle ages. is anyone thinking anymore? is planet earth purging the poison thats killing her? act or react. des posium ad ...i literally get sick when these things happen. -back to seinfeld,...

Re: Tragedy in Asia

Not to downplay this event...it is sad for anyone connected. I remember walking through feilds when I was a boy and then seeing the evidence of the catapillar I'd just stepped on. After further investigation I found many other dead insects. I thought about their families crying that daddy catapillar wouldn't be coming home again. I looked at all the dead insects and thought...Geez! how would I feel, just going about my business and...Zap...Taken out by some big boot from the sky. If nothing else, events like these should serve to remind us that we are but fragile little beings in the grand scheme of things. We tend to see ourselves as all powerful and disconnected from mother nature. As large as we think we are, we are only as big as that catapillar on that trail and the big boot will come soon enough!

Re: Tragedy in Asia

I weep for those who have lost loved ones, and pray that Asia can recover soon from a terrible blow.

Re: Tragedy in Asia

It's good to hear people that are concerned and care. In my Electronic Media class this year the teacher said reporters would sit around at times saying something like, "I hope there's an earthquake in South America today... maybe a bridge will collapse in India." It is sad that things like this happen, and when it's so far away, people don't really seem to care AT ALL. It's just news. I'm not a religious person, but my thoughts and prayers go out to these people. It makes you wonder why these things happen...?

Re: Tragedy in Asia

It is horrific. Over 40,000 lives gone and millions of lives effected in a single moment. I'm far far far from the coast (up on the border of Laos) but even people here were effected. A teacher at my college lost his cousin. The man told me this with a smile on his face. That's what's REALLY hard. Thai people talk about serious topics with a smile and laughter. So, for me, it's difficult to have Thai people smile and joke when they talk about 9/11 or about the earthquake. But that's their way of dealing with problems. They just smile and keep it light. Avoidance and denial. Sad.

Let's just hope the families of the victims will find stength, ...those who survived will recover quickly, ...and those who are lost will be found.

Re: Tragedy in Asia

Southern India is still struggling to recover from the bolt from the blue. as the official figuers of death toll over 6400 in India and over 30,000 missing from small island of Anamans alone. It hit the cost with out a warning distroying the the whole costal line in one blow.(it is reported that the officials knew something is going to happen but couldnt predict what and where more to it there are no warning systems in place) Every one is in a shock and madly trying to contact the loved one.

Re: Tragedy in Asia

Friends in Thailand. We have friends on vacation there and no word about them as of this morning. They are English teachers here in Tokyo having a break in the sunshine. The last time we met was at a local film event here and they were talking about their upcoming holiday trip. I can't imagine what they must have been through. Now we are just waiting to see if they are ok and wanting them back here.

Japan has a few reported deaths and quite a few missing. The scope of this is just unimaginable.

Living in Japan we are always aware of earthquakes. This year we have had the big Nigata quake as well as dozens of sizeable shakes that have made working in the office feel like a ride on the train. Knowing that this same kind of event is inevitable here too is pretty frightening. But then where in the world is truly safe?

2004 has been a terrible year for tragic events world wide. It does seem that the world has taken a step backwards in terms of horrific events. War, terror, disease, famine and natural disasters are a part of our human reality despite every effort humanity takes to avert them. Sadly they have all been far too familiar nightmares in recent memory. I hope and wish everyone a sane and safe 2005.

Re: Tragedy in Asia

2004 sucks ass...

have you guys seen the video from inside a resturaunt looking out over the water as the wave came in? in came right up into the room the guy was in...and the building was elevated...you can see people being swept away. so brutal.

Re: Tragedy in Asia

Ya'know the weird thing is that the drudgereport headlined a huge earthquake that was taking place before the tsunamis hit. The first thing I thought when I read about the Earthquake was Tsunami. It's a human failure that we don't have better warning systems in place for this kind of thing. It's hard to fathom the scale of this kind of tragedy.
