tracking television onto screen in post

Hello,

In my next project I am going to need to put a television in various situations that would make it impossible to function (such as underwater, and moving around) and I wanted to be able to insert the footage in post.

I have a general idea of how to accomplish this, but I wanted to see how some of you would approach this effect in the most efficient manner.

I am looking for both the post production tasks, but also the stuff I should do on set to make post possible and any potential pitfalls that could blow the shot.

For the sake of discussion lets say somebody is carrying a TV underwater and the screen should be playing static?

Thanks

Dean

Put tracking markers on each corner of the tv screen. Get some orange flourescent tape, really bright especially for underwater use, and put crosses or x's on each corner so that when you track it in your program of choice the tracker has something to latch onto.

I would highly recommend doing some tests first. You also have to think about things like if the actor is holding the TV and his fingers are over the screen you'll need to roto and comp them in to sell the shot.

Thats a great tip, will test that soon and post it up.

Next, how about treating the mapped image to appear to be glowing or have scanlines or whatever? Any tips on that?

There is a filter in PS that's called halftone or something like that; it will create the scanlines look, do it to a solid so that the end result is black and white lines and then use a blending mode over your image. Glow is a pretty standard effect in most programs, but you can make one from scratch using a solid, very light in color, and then using something like screen or add and animating the opacity to pulse slowly up and down. Then blur the hell out of the layer and you're done.
