Totevision analog/digital component blowout problems

I just talked to tech at Totevision and they said that the reason why the 703HD monitor is blowing out at relatively low light levels is because the signal going into the component BNC inputs needs to be digital. The HVX outputs an analog component signal, so I've got a problem. Even after reducing the brightness and playing with the contrast, it is still a major issue.
They suggested two things
1) return the monitor for a refund or,
2) try bringing the 3 RCA component ends from the HXV into one cable that will jack into the BNC CVBS input (or try the S-Video).
Basically, I'm concerned with maintaining a HD level of pixels. Would going from the RCA component cables to the CVBS BNC input maintain the same resolution? Has anyone encountered this problem and tried a solution?

One thing about ToteVision that I can say from my experience - some of the techs there are not very helpful in explaining things. If there is a digital signal it will keep it digital to provide the most exact images possible. If it is an analog signal it will digitally convert it. So the "blowing out" you are referring to is a result of that conversion. You may want to check the levels on a scope, I use this monitor all the time now, and I know that if the image is blowing out my levels are to high, or I have adjusted the brightness/contrast to much (which is pretty much at all).
It is a $600 LCD monitor, and it will never look as good as an analog HD monitor.
Check your levels and adjustments, and then if it is still a problem, have it replaced. It shouldnt be doing that. Try the S-Video without adjusting the Cam, and see if there is a difference between that and the component.

Thanks Sunstream. I tried the S-Video (keeping the HVX recording mode in 1080i24PA). There were no blow-out problems when I used this monitor with S-video. The image looks sharp and properly exposed. However, it's in black and white. I suppose there is a simple explanation (it's B&W in 480 60i too), but I don't know what it is. A further question--if I'm using the S-video out, that means I will be looking at a standard definition image doesn't it?

Yes with the s-video you will be looking at a High def image scaled to standard def image, however dont forget that 7"LCDs are only 480 anyway, so regardless the image is not Full HD. This I think is where the argument comes in for 480 HD. What Makes 480HD HD is the extra vertical lines that make it 16:9. Im hazy on this, so maybe someone can elaborate, but the s-video signal is probably anamorphic, so it is a 4:3 image stretched at the monitor, while the component HD signal is actually 16:9 which will give you a sharper picture.
You may want to check your s-video cable, because it should be in color. You cannot use both s and component out at the same time, you must unplug the D4 cable to activate the S port.
I still think you may have an issue with the processing board, as I do not experience these blow out problems as long as I keep everything under 95 IRE.

ok, thanks for the input. the black and white thing was my mistake. still some really funky things going on with this monitor, however. I think it's blowing out too early and the component connection blinks off--and sometimes it looks like the image is squeezed (which has something to do with what you're saying above, I guess).
