Totally Random Advice - 1 or 2 dogs?

Leashes are your friend. Even if just in your yard. Teaching them proper leash ettiquite now will help in so many ways. But, b/c you have two of them, it may be harder. Letting you handle one and your wife handle the other and taking them on long walks (after you tire them out with playing) will help alot...

Learn how to properly use the leash now, it will save you a lot of trouble in the future.

I've actually been taking them out of their crates in turns, that way I can deal with one alone, then the other - then they get to play together. I take them out of the crate and immediately put the leash on them, and walk them to the backyard - only after they've taken care of business do I let them go back in, and off the leash. Then I deal with the other one...

at least that's the plan today - day 1.

So far, so good.
Though I have to say, it is exhausting.

It is also clear already that one of the dogs is much quicker to learn that the other.

I've been reading about clicker training - and want to get one to give it a shot.
I'm also looking into all the books that were suggested in this thread.

Actually, they just quieted down after putting them back in their crates.
But thats after a good long while of straight whinning...and the occasisional bark.
Luckily they haven't really hit a rhythm with their howling just yet...but I fear its right around the corner.


so - anyone have any advice on teaching them 'leash etiquette'?
They aren't taking to them too well...and in fact its the opposite of what i thought would be the problem. They don't pull on the leash at all, in fact, they kind of freeze up and I wind up having to tug on them to get them to walk with me.

Resurecting this thread just to show them off.....
I feel like we've finally gotten used to having them.
They've gotten alot bigger, but they've also gotten alot better.

We're taking them out to the dog park today for the first time, so we'll see how they do around other dogs.

Hope you are ready for a whole new adventure.

Unlike house training or other domestic stuff which is a process no matter what, you may get lucky with the dog park and discover that they are 100% socialized out of the box.

Or they may do fun things like hump everything in sight or get in fights. :evil: :)

awesome dogs Luis - looks like those two will keep you on your toes :) Just curious but does anyone else make up personalities and voices for their dogs and have entire converstations with several of them at a time? Are the wife and I just crazy? sometimes the conversations dont even involve us.

Thank god - I thought we were the only ridiculous ones.
Our dogs each have their own voice...and yes, there are entire conversations that go on that don't even involve us.

The dog park was good - it took them a bit to come out of their shells, and the never completely loosened up, but they spent a good deal of time with the other dogs.
No fights, no humping...

They get tuckered out pretty quickly (especially because its so damn hot here).
Once the St. Bernard/Great Dane mix showed up, we called it a day.

I figured one step at a time.
They seems a bit taken aback by a dog big enough to eat them in one gulp...

That's good, I think a mix of timidness and and outgoingness is ideal. Shows they are testing the waters and learning what's what. Soon they will know a great dane is only slightly more likely to gobble them up than you are.
 
No you and your wife arent alone Luis - I've got a screenplay brewing based solely on my dogs very special personalities and quirky interactions with the world.
