Total Novice - Working with Low Shutter Speeds

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to achieve a strobe effect using a DVX....i want to shoot subjects in low light situations and achieve a strobed effect with perhaps some light trails. im assuming you need to use a low shutter speed and a low apeture setting but nothing i try seems to give me the desired effect. I have the shutter speed set as low as possible on the 24p mode and have the iris open fully but nothing looks like i want it too, it just looks fairly normal. What am i doing wrong? thanks.

strobe look would come from a high shutter speed but light trails would seem to come from low like in a still camera. You would have to do the trails in post with an echo time type of plug in and blur. The strobe you can also do in post just by using a stobe plugin which will just basically set your brightness to a timed high and low setting.

That is a problem. There really isnt a way. What I would do is shoot them well lit, drop the MP down and then darken it in post to your liking.

I saw some footage a guy shot for me of a gig in seattle using a DVX100 and the lighting was fairly low, your average sort of lighting for a gig and he filmed a portion in a way that gave the whole thing a sort of strobe-like effect along with some slight light trails. There was nothing done in post at all, I'd just like to try and achieve the same effect without messing with the footage afterwards.

If he shot that for you then call him and ask him how he did that because I dont know. Unless he shot in 24pA and the strobe look is from the advanced pulldown. The streaks could be from turning up the chroma so the colors bleed.

Yeah I think he did shoot it in 24p, I'll try and get a hold of him....I just thought it might have been something fairly simple as whatever he did it was done quickly while he was shooting, he sort of went back and forth from shooting it normally to the effect I mentioned. Thanks for your time though.
