tota melt

This light was inadvertently plugged in for some time with the barn doors closed & it melted one of the things that holds the bulb - should I repace it or is it still safe to use? Any way to repair it?

thanks

Been there, done that! You can order replacement parts from Lowel -- they have a complete catalog available through their website at http://www.lowel.com/partscenter/. The replacement sockets for the Tota are $7.56 apiece. Or, of course, just send it to them for repair. I wouldn't risk using it in that condition.

When I saw the thread title, my first thought was that "Tota Melt" sounded like some kind of sandwich with cheese ...

Thanks for the link! Did you repair yours yourself? How difficult was it?

I don't remember that it was too hard, but that was, literally, decades ago and I've forgotten the specifics now! It does look like you'll need to drill out a couple of rivets that they've used to attach the socket. I have grinders and a drill press and such in my little basement shop, so that's not a huge challenge, but if I were limited to hand tools it might be a bit of a bother.

Lowel has a pdf with full diagrams of their lights, it includes part numbers so you can diagnose what's wrong, what you need and how to fix it. I'll have to dig it up and get back to you if you like. Out of curiosity, did this happen because the barn doors were closed?

Edit: I need my caffeine. I read through this and didn't realize both points were stated above! Fixing it should be really straightforward but if you're feeling iffy, have an electrician look at it.
