Torn between Editing System and Panasonic Camera

Hello all, I've been debating whether to buy a new computer for editing with Avid, or to buy a camera.

As of right now I'v been looking into the Intel Core i7 builds and would consider these for editing HD.

I've been also looking at the Intel Core 2 Quad builds for HD as well.

I'm not sure which I would be better off with due to capital constraints for now, but I would want the computer to last for a bit as well as handle uncompressed HD if that is possible. The Core 2 Quad would come out to less money, and if I am more than capable of editing with it then there is no need for the i7, unless there are certain aspects of the latter I am not aware of that would make it worth the investment.

As for cameras, I've used my friend's DVX100B and I really liked it, but now that the HVX is out I am not sure whether it is a smart buy getting the DVX.

Down the road I'd like to be able to own an HD camera and work with HD on a constant basis, but as for right now my thoughts are leaning more towards getting a computer that can handle HD and getting the SD camera to have one at my disposal and to improve my skills seeing as I could always rent an HD camera if I wanted to test/use one.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice as far as the two Intel computers go and which would be worth getting, as well as the DVX or HVX it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to help me out.

I'd go with the HVX. Once you budget for a new computer the dual cores can edit dvcpro easily, but obviously isn't as powerful as the most expensive. However, I say get the HVX because it's capable of shooting SD if you can't handle HD. It's a better SD camera than the DVX, and it's better to be able to shoot something than have a nice computer with nothing to put on it.

Understandable.

I should have mentioned that my computer right now is real old, P4 2.4 with 1.5ghz ddr ram. I definetly need the comp upgrade to even do some legitimate editing to begin with.

I've been relying on school computers and equipment; I just graduated in may. So if you have any other suggestions that'd be cool. Sorry I didn't include this in the first post.

Hmm...My ancient dual-core laptop can handle DVCProHD, and runs MC3.0 (Terabyte eSATA drive, 27" DELL monitor).
However, if you're determined to go Avid, and you may want to work professionally, then for heaven's sake go qualified, otherwise Avid won't want to know when things go wrong. And if you go home-brew, they will go wrong, mark my words.
Oh, yes, and it's worth joining the Avid forums, masses of really clued up folks over there

That's good to hear. As of now I cannot invest in the HVX, so would it be wise looking into something like the Canon HV30? At least this way I could be filming and editing while saving for an upgrade. I've done some research on it and I am looking to see if there's a better camera for the price or a bit more that would be better, not all that sure though.
