Top quality studio monitors

I'm in the market for a new set of 5.1 studio monitors. I want something that is FLAT and clear sounding with very little compromise, if any. My first preference is Klein+Hummel O300 but that system (5.1) would easily exceed $12K so while I continue to work toward a system of that magnitude, I want a $3500 upgrade in the interim. I'm considering JBL LSR4328P with the JBL LSR4312SP subwoofer. Anyone have personal experience with this combination?
I would also consider a powered monitor option from Genelec, Miller and Kreisel, Dynaudio, et al. Are there other brands / models that fit into this category that I should be considering?

On a side note: I occasionally have clients and other guests in the studio, so quality, appearance and the "impressive" factor of the monitors are somewhat important in that it justifies my exhorbinant fees. ;)

Are you looking for something to mix dolby digital? If so, the stakes are much higher than $12k. If you're just looking for something mix 5.1, then there are a plethera of 5.1 solutions but most important (beyond quality monitors and converters) is going to be the room size needed. Once you have quality monitors, calibrating the system becomes the next hurdle.

Good discussion here on calibrating levels:

5.1 for film can get very, very expensive.

I own a pair of the LSR4328p's, although without the subwoofer, and find them excellent. When I compared A/B testing at the dealer I put 'em up against the K&H and find them very similar. I don't think you'll be disappointed in the JBLs.

A friend's 5.1 system is a pair of O300 for main L and R - but he uses the O110 for Centre and Rear.

If you use the new Neumann KH120 instead of the O110, you will get slightly better quality at a lower price - and probably a lot less than 12,000 maybe half that.

The system works very well - actually he also has 2 x M52 which he uses for height information.

Flat and clear = room treatment!

If that's already done then pretty much most monitors will do - you'd be surprised!

Your list is good, I'd also look at Focal and Adam. You could probably make a decent 5.1 system with some of the newer smaller monitor systems. None will look impressive at your price range - but they'd sound amazing so you can blow your clients away that way. Oh and Blue Sky. People like those but I've never heard them - they have a couple of surround setups... some in your budget, some not.

Remember you'll also need a good surround-capable monitor controller.

Tannoy makes a great 5.1 system (Ellipse iDP) but it's well above your price range too. And, when you are in that market, there's Barefoot.

Abbey Road has ADAM S3A 5.1 system, well below $12k. Need a fair sized sub to go with them, though. S3A has been replaced with a pair of new models (separate vertical & horizontal versions). There are other ADAM models worth considering also.

I have a pair of ADAM S3A:s as my main pair with Genelec 7071A sub, sounds clean and revealing, the only complaint is that sometimes I would like them (S3A) to go louder...
