Top Gun 2?

As a kid, I liked Top Gun. Now as an adult, I dig it even more. I think it's the perfect movie for young people, like myself. I would not mind seeing a sequel (despite me disagreeing with making unnecessary sequels.... I'm looking at you Indiana Jones 4 and a possible BLADE RUNNER SEQUEL...?? WHAT THE EFF, MAN!). From the story of the original one to the its flash to its romance to the acting, it's a cool movie and it's the kind of movie I wouldn't be upset over the unnecessary sequel spawning because it's not Blade Runner -- it's a really cool movie and that's all. And now rumors are saying a sequel is in the works... but my only concern is-- will it capture the youth and energy of the original? Will it be tainted with the many horrible mainstream music my generation (kinda, I guess) has come up with or will it be a retro gimmick type film with something like the awesome (yes, I like 80's music) original soundtrack? I'm excited for it, but I just hope they keep it cool. 8-)

A friend of mine took a meeting with one of the producers. He said they were centering the story around drones, which puzzled him somewhat. Maybe they are going with a drones have replaced Top Guns, but all of the sudden there is a situation that needs real pilots and Maverick gets the call. Much homoerotic volleyball playing ensues.

Won't have the same effect.

Intro Music
PAN TO YOUNG SAILOR PLAYING VIDEO GAME, SLURPING BIG COKE AND CHEETOS
"Sailor, we need you to help defuse a situation, report to Electronic Drone Ops"
"Aye, aye, sir. Can my online buddy come with me......he's killer at Modern Warfare and Splinter Cell"
DRAMATIC "We need all the hands we can, son, this is war"
FADE IN Theme Song

EDIT: Inserts shot of putting on aviator sunglasses and flight jackets. Then the homoerotic volleyball scenes. Come on Battuta........let's not deviate too much from the original.

Nope.... doesn't do it for me.

Drones are nice and all, but they're currently meant for ground strikes and recon only. With current technology the situation that would call for human pilots is any adversary aircraft. So if they change that basic rule it turns into scifi to some extent, depending on how long production takes. Military aviation is still very much alive and it would be a mistake to stray too far from that. The romanticism of the person in the front seat is a big deal. I love UAV's, they're including in my upcoming avionics training, but it just isn't the same. It's kind of like realizing that some theaters really have one part time projectionist and a good server.

As for style, if this were to go through I would expect to see an original score that hints at the 80's tracks while not using popular music at all. Probably a blend of the old rock and more modern percussion heavy tracks. I say this because it's a trend that most films have been following, after producers realized that dated soundtracks limit your sales options in the future and using songs people listen to in the foreground can limit your audience to fans of those songs. At least that's my opinion on why it changed.

This sounds like a horrible, horrible idea. Actually, the idea of a sequel sounds horrible to begin with. I therefore imagine what your friend heard was likely true.

Can't imagine Tom Cruise will sign on, but a lot of money can change a man's mind. Val Kilmer's once promising career is all but in the toilet, so maybe they can get him on board, so to speak.

A Blade Runner prequel is an even more disastrous idea.

I'm getting sick now and will leave this thread.
