Top Gear

My brother, the gear head, dragged me downstairs to watch an episode on BBC America...and...WOW.

Has anyone seen this? Not only is funny, but the whole show is shot so well.

It's an incredible show. I'm not a motorhead in the least but the show always has me hooked.

Great stuff.

Last weekend they replayed an episode where the host is driving a sports car through Japan, trying to beat his friends who are on the bullet train.

that's one of my favorite shows currently on tv. combines my love of ridiculous cars with awesome cinematography and editing--and it's incredibly entertaining. my girlfriend hates it when i ramble on about cars, but she actually enjoys watching top gear (at least thats what she tells me). it makes the powerblock on spiketv look like garbage. too bad you can't buy the full seasons on dvd, only "best of" crap

Top Gear has always been a fun show, even if you aren't that into cars.

What ever happened to the lame, bastardized American version that Adam Carolla was working on?

On that same note, I just heard that Fox is doing an American version of "Absolutely Fabulous". When will we learn that it is really lame to take good British shows and try to convert them to American versions? Yes, I know I am the only one who hates the American version of "The Office" and loves the BBC version but there you have it.

Nice avatar, btw: for the longest time I was like "that looks familiar..." and then I caught my brother watching Spirited Away and remembered. NO FACE!

but I digress,

Sometimes I hang my head in shame at how we have to take what works in any other country and regionalize it for US audiences. But a business is a business I suppose...

but especially with these Brit to US adaptations; when you take out the bleak outlook on life and biting British Wit... I mean, that's half the fun of the Top Gear Equation right there (if I had to guess):

Car Porn + Dry British Wit = SUCCESS

Saw them filming once or twice here. The track they have is the one that they shot the 007 Casino Royale airplane sequence on. Amongst other productions - that's just probably most well known.

Proud to be British! I love the score's they include to.
Although 'Old' Top Gear was a lot more serious about car's and unscripted- less humour. Some people miss that, I don't know.

Double Post :)

BBC America (?) also recently took another British show called 'Life on Mars', apaprently It's set in NY instead now? Don't know if anyone's actually seen it.

Ive shot some stuff with Richard Hammond (not for top gear though) and on the same day at the same airfeild they were shooting the top gear annual dvd thingy. Was pretty cool watching the explosions too.

I loooove Top Gear. I'll miss it so when I ditch DirecTV for antenna-only viewing. :( But the show is such a blast. I've read that it's the most expensive show to produce on the BBC -- but I can't remember where I got that info from. Looks like it, though.

I heard the American version is still trying to find a buyer. I hope they don't. I may love the US version of "The Office," but how often does something like that happen?

hoarp001 - Is Hammond really that short or are Jeremy and James just that tall?

I also like the "other"British car show, I believe its called Fifth Gear. I really like the main presenter. He really knows about driving (former racer) and talks from a "car fan"perspective. Top Gear became too much of a comedy show. "The Stig" ? Come on! If I was to buy a sports car, I would definitely listen to the "Fifth Gear"bloke more than the "Top Gear" crew...

For excelent Fifth Gear shows, youtube Fifth gear Ferrari Enzo VS Mclaren F1. Fantastic show. Or check out the Mclaren SLR track test to see the guy in action.

As for Top Gear, definitely check out their "Fastest Laps" section. They invite celebrities for a lap in a crappy car. Lewis Hamilton was hilarious, and so was... Lionel Ritchie!...

I schee your point 'bout comedy over real review (?) but for me, the decisions will forever be "do I want to supersize that?" than "should I buy an zonda?"

if you're talking about the clip 'bout the man that owns both the Enzo and Mclaren F1...I'm just floored by the fact that the man owns both.

Yes, exactly that one... Lucky bastard! :)

The number one comment I get from house wives who watch my show is "your show isn't about cars, it's about people."
I feel much like that when watching Jeremy. He makes the viewer feel like they know him.
Do that and you're in.
