Top Gear: America... FML

I'm a huge fan of the BBC series. History channel is going to try and bring it (a whole new version of the show) to the US this season.

I'd be banned if I let myself express my true feelings about this in an uncensored manner.

FML. I especially hope they don't take the 'middle america' overweight gear-head approach, however their casting seems to try and balance the act a bit. I've had enough of those types from shows like PawnStars, MeteorMen, and etc. I much prefer the classier auto enthusiast team of the original Top Gear presenters. I just don't know how they can match that line-up. James May and Jeremy Clarkson are the best. Richard Hammond is good in his own way, haha.

I wish television presenters would have class again... and not just be the 'everyman' character. Because the 'everyman' American does not entertain me.

Hoping for a flop to send history channel a message. I usually do not root against programming but in this case I feel robbed and ashamed of how they tried to 'Americanize' it and the result will most likely be a less classy, less sophisticated product. They will probably just focus on the super sports cars and skip all the cool stuff the BBC does on every car of every price range.

On another note, I'm surprised it's taken this long to jump the pond and be shamefully reincarnated. Figured the money moguls would have seen this opportunity a couple of seasons ago.

They've tried before. Twice, I think.

This specific incarnation is supposed to be - by avowed gear heads who are very much fans of the BBC version - the best car program on American TV. I'll let you make what you will of that!

I just don't understand why they don't syndicate it... My cable package gets BBC America, so I get all the new episodes on demand, but still... I figure it would be cheaper to import the original than recreate it 'in house'.

Maybe it's because American viewers seem to need subtitles to follow British vernacular ... and I'm not just sayin' -- I've watched a few shows lately where that's exactly what was done. Or maybe it's because most of the cars reviewed are never and will never be spotted on American roads ...or maybe it's just because Clarkson and the gang will, without fail, hate any car built in America. Especially after the GT40 fiasco. Here in Canada we get Top Gear on cable -- my PVR records a few a week & I watch them as much for the cinematography as the gear head dreaming. Some very attractive work done on that show. Anyone know what they use to shoot the pretty stuff ..?
