Top 10 Space movies of all time

Another list that sucks balls.

What person puts 2001 at the top?
How did 2 Star Trek movies make it in there?
Where is ALIENS?
Where is The Black Hole?
Where is Close Encouters
E.T.?

This list is not good.

I know what you mean, no Spaceballs.....a classic. LOL

"The Wrath of Khan" should be in there. If Star Trek didn't exist, and it was exactly the same as it is, it would still be one of the great sci-fi films of all time.

However, "Jedi" doesn't belong there if it bumps out "The Black Hole." Neither does "ST: First Contact."

"E.T." isn't really a space movie, and I'd pretty much say the same about "Contact" and "Close Encounters."

But "Aliens"? Heck yeah!

IMHO:

-Contact should be replaced with Planet of the Apes (1968)

-The Right Stuff should be replaced with From the Earth to the Moon (1998 edition)

-Star Trek:First Contact should be replaced with Aliens

-2001 should be replaced by Forbidden Planet -or- The Black Hole

Note: I do not consider E.T, Close Encounters, or The Day the Earth Stood Still to be "space movies"...or they would have made the cut as well.

Good point, David.

The criteria that I was going by was that the protagonist spends at least a few scenes "in space". Who knows what parameters they go by when generating these lists though.

What defines a Space Movie then?
John, I assumed it was when the leads are visitors to space and not just visitees of guests from space. Visitees...is that a word? Ah, hell - it is now.

Gotta disagree. While it may not be considered a true space movie, I think that The Right Stuff, for its age and overall content matter is incredible. To compare a feature film with a miniseries is unfair. Harry Potter would have worked best if it was a mini series, but the movie was still pretty damn good. The Right Stuff is one of the best film adaptations I've seen.

i'm a huge fan of "The Right Stuff". Ed Harris is a great John Glenn. All the actors are great in the movie and the movie overall is excellent. I personally know John Glenn, he's real good friends with my dad. That having been said, I think that "From the Earth to the Moon" is better than "The Right Stuff".

Yankee,

I knew I was pushing the envelope by listing a mini-series...
but, to me at least, a mini-series on HBO is so incredibly cinematic that a new label should be slapped on it. I would apply the same line of thinking to Band of Brothers (and undoubtedly this will apply for Band of Brothers II). I mean, when I think mini-series, I think The Thorn Birds or North and South.

As far as The Right Stuff goes, I would put Apollo 13 up against it head to head as both a film and as an adaptation (it was based on Jim Lovell's Lost Moon.)

Hold the presses, hold the presses! Has no one mentioned "The Man Who Fell To Earth" yet? Not only a great flick, with a great new Criterion DVD, but a great adaptation of a novel as well. Dig it.
