Top 10 Films of 1999...

Ah yes, 1999...

We, as humans, finally surpassed six billion strong - Six different films each grossed more than 400 million smackers - & if I had heard that poo pooing Prince song one more time, I woulda plotzed!

It's old hat by now, but please try to do a top 10 in order (hard as it may be) with an optional two or three "honorable mentions".

Okay, here are my top ten in a year that I thought was soft. For American Beauty to win the Academy Award, it had to be soft.

6. Notting Hill
7. The 13th Warrior
8. Galaxy Quest

Three kings
Audition
Magnolia
Sleepy Hallow

OK, this is my first time participating in these threads, but I figure since I overflow with opinion anyway, why not share it.

Jeremy's Best Films of 1999 List:

01 American Beauty
02 Fight Club
03 Boondock Saints
04 The Matrix
05 Magnolia
06 The Green Mile
07 For Love of the Game
08 The Hurricane
09 The Blair Witch Project
10 Dogma

Immediate defense of selections:
Fight Club - I loved the book and the movie is somewhat faithful to it. That being said, this is the movie I put on while I go to sleep every night for the last three years.
Boondock Saints - It is a QT rip off, but there is something I enjoy about this film
Magnolia - With the exception of the frog crap, this is a great film and one of the best examples of perfection in acting
The Hurricane - Great use of a great Dylan song, good acting performances, and I think this is a great example of a biography of a little known American figure
The Blair Witch Project - As an indie film director I am extremely happy for the cultural impact this film had on mainstream audiences. This is the single film that opened the majority of American's eyes to the fact that there is indie film out there
Dogma - I like the story, for as bad as KS is as a director, I like the story.

Honorable Mentions: Lake Placid, Office Space, Deep Blue Sea (Could this have been SMJ's prep role for Snakes on a Plane?)

The Oscars; Who Won, and Who Shoulda Won IMHO

Best Picture
Who Won: American Beauty
Shoulda Won: American Beauty

Best Director
Who Won: Sam Mendes (American Beauty)
Shoulda Won: David Fincher (Fight Club)

Shoulda Won: Tom Cruise (Magnolia)

Supporting Actress

Shoulda Won: Tom Cruise (more opportunities for his role in Magnolia, that was the first role I ever saw him in that blew me away)

Cinematography
Who Won: Conrad L. Hall (American Beauty)
Shoulda Won: Conrad L. Hall (American Beauty)

06 Dogma
07 The Boondock Saints
08 Any Given Sunday
09 Sleepy Hollow
10 The Eye of the Beholder

Who Shoulda Won:

Best Picture: American Beauty

Best Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Best Actor: Kevin Spacey

Best Actress: Annette Bening

Supporting Actor: Gotta go with Michael Clark Duncan

Supporting Actress: Toni Collette

Cinematography: Sleepy Hollow

Best Score: I have to agree with Callaghan and say John Williams for Episode I. Duel of the Fates was just awesome.

IMO, Green Mile was totally mediocre. It definitely doesn't measure up to Shawshank Redemption.

My personal fav on the list was American Beauty. I haven't watched it since 2000 though. I don't think a movie like AB would resonate with people today.

I think American Beauty is one of the only best picture winners in the last decade that ages well and will survive the test of time. I think movies like Titanic and Gladiator don't age well and won't be remembered, but American Beauty stands on it's own.

I don't see how you can compare the two. The Green Mile was already infused with strong supernatural elements carried over from King's beautifully-crafted serial novel series. Magnolia, on the other hand, suffered from just plain horrible storytelling IMO...or as I like to say, it was struck with a mean case of Paul-Thomas-Andersonitis. Why both himself and Soderbergh have appeal I will never, ever know.

It is a safe bet as to who was calling the shots there.

I didn't want to say the 9 word, but after 9/11, I feel like I have more trouble relating to introspective movies like AB.

While many sing the praises of American Beauty, I am not one of them. I will stipulate that Conrad Hall is a brilliant cinematographer. The acting in the movie was all right but I believe that Kevin Spacey has been better in other roles. This movie just didn't do it for me. I am aware that this is not a popular position. As for being the best movie of the year? I am mystified.

Now, I am not trying to tell anyone they're crazy for liking this movie...that's what the whole taste thing is all about. I feel I am supposed to like this movie because so many others do, including people who's opinion I respect. I have watched it three time in an attempt to like it. I think that is enough to form an opinion on the movie. The story just didn't interest me.

Yeah, I agree Magnolia was terrible story telling.

Arlington road was nice though, I wish I could see Audition that looks like an amazing Asian Horror movie, tried to rent it by my video store that is ASIAN owned and he doesn't even carry it!. =/
