n00b question 2

I like to use ND filters and polarization, but I hate the glass sandwich, are there COMBINATION lenz and filter's?
 
Can somebody explain to me what a matte box exactly does besides making the camera look really nice? I suspect now it has something to do with things suggested above and keeping out flares, but still not sure...
