Too Much Echo

I'm shooting a huge auditorium and we minimized the echo as much as we could while filming it. There's still a little bit of an acho bleeding into the lav and boom mic's.

What the best way fix it in post? We're shooting with dvx-100's and editing with vegas and Avid.

Thank you

ADR :)

Seriously, Reverb is pretty much the death of good audio.

You can remove some of the echo between words but doesn't help during the dialog. That stuff is permenant.

Sorry.

One trick I've used (not sure if it is really a trick, but seems to work for me, and only works if you're using a mixer with mic gain control) pull the gain way down, pull the low way down and boost the record volume (I use a PMD 670 recorder, and I boost the volume on the recorder). This takes out a bit more echo after sound blankets fail to completely remove echo.

I shot in an auditorium recently, and there was some dialogue on the stage. I spoke with the director and we shot most of the dialogue in close up and closed the stage curtain. This helped cut the echo quite a bit. May not be possible in your situation, but I always give the director options to work with, and he liked this one.

Caveat: Not all directors are willing to listen to suggestions from the sound dept. ;-) (I find that those that do not listen tend to spend quite a bit of time in ADR sessions later... ;-)
