Why isn't this guy directing more movies is beyond me. I think that "American History X" was a phenomenal piece of work, with beautiful cinematography, powerful acting, and a good solid script. I really thought it was the open the door he needed to start shaking things up. He's been making some documentaries lately (Lake of Fire is supposed to be really good), but nothing would make me happier than to see him making movies again. I think he is a talented director that should give the feature format another go.

Under controversy:

The main controversy over the film centered on director Tony Kaye's attempts to remove his name from the credits, preferring to use the pseudonym Alan Smithee. When this was refused he chose "Humpty Dumpty" as an alternative pseudonym, which in turn was also rejected. Kaye alleged that his reasoning for this was Edward Norton's re-editing of the film to give himself more screen time, where in fact Norton extended the film during editing sessions in the post-production period. Kaye's theory also proved to be infeasible as Norton was the lead actor in the film and any editing would of course provide the film with more footage of his character (Derek Vinyard), as well as the Danny Vinyard played by Edward Furlong. The Director's Guild of America ultimately denied Kaye the right to remove his name from the production, reasoning that Kaye had placed ads in Variety attacking the film, thus violating Guild rules regarding the right to invoke the pseudonym. Kaye proceeded to sue the Directors Guild and New Line Cinema, claiming they had violated his First Amendment rights.[1]

That's the unverified word of what happened and probably why he isn't directing anything.

Yes, I remember reading that when American History X first came out. It's a shame though. Tony is a tallented guy...a bti of a weirdo and a maniac...but talented.
