Wow, today was a pretty good day!!

I have a day job, and I learned today that I am being up graded a full pay grade, and will be getting a pretty decent raise. This was a total surprise, and did not know that I was getting the upgrade.

Also, I cleared enough off of a short film I shot this week to totally pay off my outstanding student loans, that I have been paying a pretty significant chunk of change each month on for a while. I was on track to pay them off in December, but I am so very happy to have the off of my back now.

Needless to say, I am pretty pleased!

So, what kind of gear should I spend this new disposal income on?

Nice congrats!

I'd say save your extra disposable income, however whenever I was in the same situation I bought new gear!

Maybe use the cash to pre-order a Black Magic camera (if they will ever go into full production).

I was thinking about that camera. However, what I need first is a vehicle that I can haul my gear in and I am going to be shopping around for a van or something to do that. I have a FS100 that I think will serve me pretty good for a little while so I am thinking about really doubling down on lighting and grip gear.

Can't go wrong with that. Lighting, grip, and lenses last a long while.

I lived OK on my starting salary in 1991. I think it was $45K, so it was decent (MBA, etc.) After that, I maintained the same budget and automatically invested everything above that. Not a bad strategy if your previous budget was livable! I was saving about $1K per month a few years later. Buy yourself a treat now, but get that extra money out of site ASAP if you can! Once it is gone you won't notice it. Good luck! (Sorry, enter key not working.)

I would save some definitely lol. Some savings never hurt anybody. Working paying off lots of debts right now...it's a long hard road to hoe.

Listen to this advice.
Read it... then read it again.

(then do that)

^^^ what they say. Whenever I got a bump in pay, I would treat myself with one nice toy, then stash it away for a rain day!
(or retirement, or emergencies, or for the kids....or for the kids emergencies...or just in case things change on you.)

Honda element! A great production vehicle if u can find one.

Well, I live outside of Detroit and my roommate is a UAW member who works for GM, I had better find a Big Three product to use (Probably a "Mom Cruiser" mini-van type)!

Thanks everybody for the advice. Yeah, putting away most of the windfall for a rainy day is the smartest thing to do, and I plan on it.

I love using my wife's mini-van! Comfortable. Convenient. Doesn't scream "valuable stuff inside me."

Yeah, that is what I was thinking. It always seems that, on a shoot, we either need to tote stuff, or people, and with a mini-van, I could do both (Within reason, of course).

I know at times it's tough not to go out and spend extra money on gear, but if I were you, I would bank it for awhile, it seems the economy is going to continue to get worse, it can't hurt to have a little extra quid in the bank, you never know when your gonna need an extra car payment, or rent, ect...

P.S Congrats on your new employment upgrade, this can only mean one thing, They like the work you do:) So as always, keep up the good work!!
