Today I am quitting smoking! it aint gonna be easy.

Just be a man and deal with the pain. In 72 hours, you'll feel fine.

Serious.

After that it's all good. If you're a heavy drinker, I'd be cautious of stopping that as well; too much too soon.

This may sound ridiculous but drinking helped me quit smoking. Whenever I got a strong craving I would down some swigs of rum. The buzz would release some endorphins or whatever easing my cravings and taking my mind off ciggs. Might not work for some or most people but it worked for me. Like hudson said after the first 3 days it gets exponentially easier. Ask yourself what do ciggs do for me? Do they make me smell better? Do they make me money? Do they make me more attractive? Do they make me healthier? NO they do the exact opposite. Like someone else said you have to wanna quit for yourself. Good luck.

Gradual man. Nicotine is addictive and will only result in getting back to smoking if you will just stop instantly. It's more like on the first month, limit your smoking to 15 sticks a day, then on the 2nd month, 10 sticks, then on the 3rd, 5 sticks.... Also I think it would help if you distract yourself with attention grabbing activities like playing Texas holdem poker (guide on the link) whenever you crave to smoke.

so this thread is seven months old. How'd it work out for you?

If it didn't...and this is probably bad advice, i've heard of people getting off cigarettes via easing into cigars, which are much more manageable.

I just started a small tobacco crop, and decided to quit by only smoking what I grow. I'll stop buying cigs after my first harvest. It's a start :)

I've tried smoking at various times throughout my life and I can never remember to keep doing it... I must be wired weird because I don't get much of an effect from any substance... meaning even medications... it all seems "inert".

But... one day... like 10 years ago... I hung out with a friend all day and I bought a couple of Arnold style "commando" cigars... and I smoked BOTH of them in one day... ALL day... doing various impressions of famous cigar smokers as the cigar was down to the appropriate size for the particular impression... and about 30 minutes after I finished the second cigar... I got sicker then I've EVER been in my entire life... after puking about 5 times... I fell asleep with exhaustion... on my back... on the lawn... and my good friend just left me there... I woke up and it was late night. :)

Nobody appreciates a puking comedian these days.

Oh... and that was the last time I craved a cigar... I haven't bought one since.

My point is that if it makes you sick... really sick... then you'll probably find a way to give it up. Lots of people end up in the hospital... facing death... over a habit... and that's usually a pretty good way to reassess... Get yourself a little coffee straw... and every now and then try breathing through that without cheating... do it until you start to feel panic about breathing... now imagine if that was just IT for you... no more strenuous activity... just the KNOWING that your body no longer works good enough to maintain itself... and you could die from lack of air... just by doing what is ANY normal activity to somebody else.

Ask somebody who has, or has had emphysema... grab a little coffee straw and try breathing through it... that's pretty accurate... and maybe that will help you stay off the sticks.

this happened to me about 4 months ago, and i still haven't been able to smoke one because of the taste...

the reason you puked so much it probably the same reason for me, i accidentally swallowed a bit of the cigar... and that just triggered all hell to break loose.... i vomited more than i think i had in my stomach

I love the Steve Martin joke: "Someone asks, hey, mind if I smoke? I say, no, you mind if I fart? It's one of my habits. I tried to quit once for a year, but I gained a lot of weight..."

Yeah, filthrich, how goes it?

I quit on New Years, and have had no problems yet. It's only a few weeks, but I have since been through the ultimate test: Drunk OFF MY ASS, at a bar with two of my heaviest smoker friends, and did not go out once for one. Did not even want to. Oddly, I drink more when I don't smoke. I think smoking makes me a little ill and not able to hold as much liquor.

I think Zazacast said it best: You have to do it for you. And you have to be ready to do it.

In my case, it was a friend's mom in Texas who just had a nodule removed from a lung. Dunno why, that just flipped a switch in my head.

But also, I was just sick of smoking. Over the past few months, I had just grown to not like doing it that much. So it was kind of easier for me...

We'll see, but right now, whenever I DO think about going out for a smoke, I have a simple thing that clicks in my head and says: "Oh wait, I'm a non-smoker." And that's it. I think in your head you have to be either a smoker or not. Take no puffs, no cheating. It will just lead you back.

I don't think everyone is addicted. I don't think I was. But if you are, do yourself a favor and get medical help. NYC has a program that gives free help. Maybe they do in your town too. For instance, my GF is an addict. It's really hard for her without an aid of some kind.

It was easier for me too, because I NEVER smoked in my house. Ever. The idea of having smoke all over my house is beyond disgusting to me. I was one of the only smokers happy for the indoor ban in NYC. Except of course, then you got to smell just how frickin' wretched CB's was inside. Not to mention Mars Bar...Yeeeikes.

Of course, I have no kids. If I had kids, I would be a heroine addict by now...:)

Carrying a picture of a diseased lung in your wallet and taking it out to look at while experiencing a wave of craving helps. And chicks dig it.

It can be done, just takes a lot of Will power.

Also to help change:

Anything associated with smoking remove them from your lifestyle, yes this includes social groups that smoke, change to groups that do not.

Its not easy but then no one every said it was, the upshot of it is, given enough time your body will heal the damage back to normality (depending on individual cases).

Both my parents smoked, use to go on car trips - 500 miles - with them both smoking, think of what the car was like with the windows barely rolled. I also remember painting the ceiling of our living room, the ceiling was brown - gross.

I knew once I left that house I'd get my lungs back, well, like in 7 years. I hated the smoking, so get a patch, get the gum, get whatever assistance you need, just quit!

Neither I, nor my brother or sister smoke.
