To do or not to do?

Would it be better to keep the footage and Vegas Pro file on an external hard-drive (3TB) and just use the computer to edit or would you keep the Vegas Pro file on your desktop and use the external hard-drive to house your footage OR would you just have both on your desktop for editing? I wonder if Vegas works better with the computer if it is kept outside the desktop vs being on the desktop?

Just wondering how others do it?

I think that would depend on the I/O to the external drive, e.g. USB 2 would be slower than USB 3, and so on. Internal drives tend to have faster I/O, but that would depend on your individual computer set up.

Keeping all a project's files on an external drive is an appealing idea - swap from one large project to another just by swapping drives.

I keep large internal drives and keep all files on them until the project is completed. I do not keep anything but software and Windows on my C: drive.

I keep the Vegas project files (there are usually many per project) on the same drive as the footage and all other media, and then just do a whole-block transfer of everything to an external drive for backup and archiving.

That way, as mentioned, the Vegas files and footage will always be together, and very importantly, in the same directory structure, so returning to the project after I've cleared the internal drives is as easy as plugging in the external drive and opening the Vegas files. (Same applies to working on another computer.)

Thanks for your feed back. I have two internal hard drives on my laptop. I have a internal drive D on there so I will plan on using that as my editing section and carbon copy it onto my Lacie external hard drive. With all main files on my Lacie all I will have to do is update the Vegas file after each edit.
