To buy or not to buy?

Hi guys.
I've read in a few different places that buying your own equipment isn't the best thing to do. I've always wondered then how does one get better at thier craft, outside of school, then.
I want to become a videographer/filmmaker and I think that having my own equipment (a dvx) is the best way for me to learn. Does this sound reasonable or am I off base?
I was wondering how many of you guys "own" your own camera and why would anyone suggest not owning(renting) equipment.
Thanks, guys.

Re: To buy or not to buy?

I think most of the guys here own their DVXs and a slew of other equipment. I certainly do -- considering the rental price of a DVX ($150+ a day) vs. the new sale price ($3200 +/-), it makes MUCH more sense to buy.

Re: To buy or not to buy?

There's nothing like having the camera at your disposal when creativity strikes or a unique opportunity presents itself.

If you're wondering about trying something new and different, then you can just pick up the camera and experiment for yourself.

If you get a phone call to see if you can shoot a play that evening for $$$, then you're good to go... (mostly). ;)

Re: To buy or not to buy?

Exactly

It's one thing tp rent certain items when needed but a whole nutha having it sitting in front of you.

Re: To buy or not to buy?

The Nuge was the first concert I ever went to. It was 1978 at the Oklahoma City Fairgrounds... general admission/seating.

He had his skintight white pants with the racoon tail hanging off the back. He was a wild caveman running and jumping all over the place.

Angel was the opening act. They were lighting up doobies onstage and tossing them out into the first few rows.

I've seen Uncle Ted another 5 times in concert over the years.

BTW, I'm sure Ted Nugent would recommend you hunt for your own camera... then skin it, cook it, and eat it.  ;D

Re: To buy or not to buy?

Bwhahah!  Thats great!

My first 'official' concert was:

Billy Squire and............ Ratt!

LOL

Although I saw Loggins and Messina when I was a wee child at San Diegos Wild Animal Park Open Ampitheatre (spell) with my dad and one of his many ho's.

Okay, what was your last concert?

Re: To buy or not to buy?

My last concert was Rod Stewart last month. Definitely a chick show.

I saw Aerosmith and KISS just a few months ago.

I've got tickets for Van Halen in July. In case you haven't heard, Sammy Hagar is back with the band.

I want to see Eric Clapton in July but his show sold out before I could get in. So, I'll be looking for scalpors on the evening of.

I've probably forgotten more concerts than most people have gone to. Not that I should be proud of that fact. ::)

I've seen everyone from Tammy Wynette to Tina Turner... from Conway Twitty to Judas Priest... from Johnny Mathis to ZZ Top and most everything or everyone in between.

I shot an episode of VH-1's "All Acess: The Dixie Chicks" in Little Rock, Arkansas last August.

Another early fave concert was Cheap Trick in 1978. This was at the height of their "Live at Buddokhan (sp?)" success. The band that opened for them? Sweet.

Remember "Ballroom Blitz"?... or "Love is Like Oxygen"?... or "Fox on the Run"? That was Sweet. Literally. ;)

Re: To buy or not to buy?

Camera, its a good thing to buy, at the price of the DVX. IF you are looking at a HD cam though, spending 120,000 may be a little counter-productive unless you are shooting 10 features a year.

I try to buy as much equipment as I can, cameras are really the only thing that gets outdated. Lights, bounces, tripods etc can last a good 10 years and as long as you keep busy you will make your initial investment back pretty fast. And as mentioned, there is nothing like having all the gear you need at your disposal without having to wait for the rental house to open, insurance to come through, etc.

Re: To buy or not to buy?

Deadly Tedly! He's a local boy for me (where I grew up)! I went to law school with his cousin Tom Nugent (who's a FREAAAAK) and have actually been to the ranch! Not that he'd remember doing it -- I'm sure he does it all the time -- but the Nuge called me his "bloodbrother" after a short chat about gun rights. Pissed my brother off because he's all ABOUT Ted.

Re: To buy or not to buy?

Oh damn Terry!  My last concert was The OFFSPRING and PENNYWISE about 10 years ago  :P

Re: To buy or not to buy?

heh heh.. ****. That was my last gig too.. Pennywise, Offspring and Nofx. Hard to beat that one, specially Bro Hymm at the end when all the bands piped in. I almost cried :)

Re: To buy or not to buy?

Thanks for all of the feedback guys. Looks like I'll be maxing out my credit b4 the end of the year.
