If one is making a short version of a potential feature but can't get too far into the story with out a larger budget, is this a bad way to end the short? Is this considered unprofesional at all or unappealing?
 
i think even if you are just "showcasing" your feature you should pick an excert that stands alone as a 3-act story or at least 4-5 minutes that completely stands on its own. especially if you plan on getting it into festivals.
