Titles made in vegas look artifacted when rendered... solution?

I've been making titles with the text media tools in vegas. I have yet to test how they look when played on a TV, but when I render the video and then play it full screen on my laptop monitor, everything looks a little artifacted. Is there a way I can prevent this?

How are you rendering it to play on your laptop?

In any case, anything with 720x480 resolution is going to look artifcated when you blow it up to full screen, especially as your screen resolution is probably 1024x768 or higher. You're stretching the image to fill a much larger space, so some quality loss will happen . . . and the crisp edges of text are especially susceptible. It will most likely look fine on a TV, which is of the resolution it's meant for.

In any case, I usually blur my text a little bit to give it softer edges. This helps a bit if I'm playing it on a large digital TV, and it also keeps it from standing out too much from the picture. This particularly helps if you want a really film-like look to it, because it looks more like it's part of the picture, instead of on top of it.

Don't forget that you can double the rez of titles, even though they'll end up as 720 x 480, they look MUCH better doubled prior to render.

In the titling tool, you'll see the resolution auto set to 720 x 480. Change it to 1440 x 960

Great tip -- I'll try it.

Usually I add a wee bit of blur, a little transparency, and make sure they're not 100% white.

What Vegas needs is aliased text.
